Why Being a Crazy Cat Lady Isn’t a Bad Thing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

As a self-proclaimed “Crazy Cat Lady” (minus the crazy, usually), with a great assortment of mugs and sweaters to prove it, I’ve never seen it as being a bad thing. After all, having endless bouts of kitty love seems like a pretty great way to live life if you ask me. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with this – the term itself is usually synonymous with being a wacky loner, who walks around in a bathrobe and hoards strange memorabilia. Well, that stereotype is about as true as all of us Canadians riding to school on our pet polar bears (although I have to admit that sounds pretty awesome). Cats are pretty darn amazing, and here’s why:

1. They don’t judge you (mostly)

Whether you have an urge to devour an entire bag of BBQ chips in one sitting or belt out an off-tune Adele hit, you can go ahead and do whatever you want in front of your feline friend. As long as it doesn’t interrupt their afternoon nap, cats really couldn’t care less about any of your weird habits or impulses.

2. They’re hilarious

Have you ever seen a cat entertain itself with a balled up piece of tin foil or do that cute butt-wiggling thing before it “hunts” its toy? If you haven’t, I highly recommend you watch one because it’s quite entertaining and you’ll definitely get a good chuckle out of it.

3. They’re super low maintenance

Dogs are all fun and games, until you have to interrupt your Netflix marathons to walk them three times a day. You’ll never have that problem with cats. As long as you give them food, water, a litter box, and lots of love, they’re good to go! You don’t even need to bathe them. In fact, I really don’t recommend that you try, unless this is your cat:

4. They make awesome cuddle buddies

With sleeping being their favourite pastime, cats make amazing cuddle buddies. They’re fluffy, warm, and have no problem curling up to you for hours on end. Everyone needs a good snuggling from time to time – whether you’re sick, going through exam season, or just need a good cuddle sesh, cats will always be there for you.

5. They’re great listeners

Cats double as free therapists. They’ll listen to your problems and endless boy rants without giving you any unwanted advice (or any advice, really). Just take one look at those big ol’ eyes of theirs and know that everything will be alright.

6. They’re good for your health

We’re getting real scientific for this one. Some studies have proven how having a cat can actually have a positive impact on your health. Their purring is known to help reduce stress, help muscles heal faster, and lower blood pressure too. Clearly, a cat purr a day, keeps the doctor away!

7. They’re freakin’ adorable

This one speaks for itself. From their little paws, to their flabby bellies, cats are just plain adorable no matter how old they are.

Well, there you have it folks. Looks like being a Crazy Cat Lady isn’t so bad after all!
