My all-time favourite part of my makeup routine is lips. Selecting the perfect lip product (or combo!) for the day is an integral part of my getting-ready process. A good lip product can elevate your makeup, make you look more put together, and change your look from day to night in two minutes. They really are powerful makeup tools, and in my opinion, one can never have too many lip products! In case you were looking for some new lippies to spice up your collection, here are some products which my friends swear by. From drugstore gems to Sephora favourites, these are tried-and-true lippies that you should feel confident in adding to your makeup routine.

Lip Balms:

Lip balms are one of the most versatile and beneficial lip products out there. So naturally, they’re where we begin this list. Unsurprisingly, almost all of my friends recommended at least one lip balm when asked about their favourite lip product. I got a mix of drugstore and higher-end lip balms, with the cheapest retailing for $5.99 and the most expensive retailing for $32.50.

Drugstore Favourites:

From the drugstore, there were four recommendations. One of my friends chose two Blistex lip balms as her favourites, one which contains SPF, while both work to effectively moisturize the lips.

Her picks: Blistex Deep Moisture Renewal SPF Lip Moisturizer and Blistex Soft & Lush Lip Moisturizer

There were two tinted drugstore lip balm recommendations: a black cherry shade from Covergirl and a soft pink shade from Burt’s Bees. These lip balms offer a sheer pop of colour, while still providing the classic lip balm hydration.

Tinted favourites: Covergirl Clean Fresh Tinted Lip Balm in “Bliss You Berry” and Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in “Daisy”

Sephora Picks:

On the higher-end side, there were two brands of lip balms mentioned. The most popular lip balm recommendation I received was Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm which was suggested by two separate friends.  Specifically in the shade “Cherry”, a cherry-scented, red-tinted lip balm. The pink shade of the Lip Butter Balm, “Pink Sugar”, was also mentioned, along with Laneige’s Lip Glowy Balm in “Berry”, another pink-tinted lip balm. These lip balms are all sweet pink or red tinted picks, making them universally flattering and appealing!

Lip Liners:

Only one of my friends gave me a lip liner recommendation, but it’s definitely the best of the best. One of the most popular yet classic lip liners at the moment is Charlotte Tilbury’s “Pillow Talk”. A nude-pink shade, it works for so many different lip looks, or it can even just be worn by itself.

Lipsticks:

Lipstick—the quintessential lip product. Everyone who wears makeup knows the power of a good lipstick. The emotional attachment that forms between a cosmetics consumer and their favourite lipstick is unmatched (as far as emotional attachments to inanimate objects can go). My friends gave me a mix of drugstore and Sephora lipsticks, in both liquid and bullet forms. There was one pink shade, two red shades, two mauve shades, and one taupe shade, providing a nice variety of colours.

Drugstore Favourites:

From the drugstore, there was only one brand that my friends used in their routines: Maybelline. Two shades of their Super Stay Ink Crayon Lipstick, along with their Vinyl Liquid Lipstick are considered favourites to two of my friends. Unlike the sheerness of the lip balms, these lipsticks are bold and give vivid pops of matte colour.

Drugstore picks: Maybelline Super Stay Ink Crayon Lipstick in “Run The World”, Maybelline Super Stay Ink Crayon Lipstick in “Bold Be You” and Maybelline Super Stay Vinyl Ink Longwear Liquid Lip Colour Lipstick in “Wicked”

Sephora Picks:

Unlike the full-coverage drugstore lipsticks, my friends’ Sephora favourites are all sheer lipsticks. Glossier’s Ultralip proved a popular choice with two shades being recommended, one dark mauve and one taupe-nude shade. The Ultralip is a balmy sheer lipstick, perfect for everyday use. Clinique’s Almost Lipstick is a similar formula, although it’s a bit less glossy on the lips than the Ultralip. One of my friends swears by Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in the classic shade “Black Honey” which is the perfect 90s-esque berry tone.

Sephora lipsticks: Clinique Almost Lipstick in “Black Cherry”, Glossier Ultralip High Shine Lipstick in “Pony” and Glossier Ultralip High Shine Lipstick in “Ember”

Miscellaneous:

Lip glosses, lip stains, lip oils, oh my! My friends shared some of their favourite glosses and two of them shared a couple lip oils, as well as a lip stain pen. All of these picks, except for the lip stain, can be found at Sephora.

Lip Glosses:

To quote Serena van der Woodsen, “Lipstick lasts longer, but gloss is more fun.” One especially fun lip gloss that was recommended is Tarte’s Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump Shift in “Big Ego,” which is a plumping lip gloss that reacts to your pH to create the perfect pink shade for you. Another plumping lip gloss recommendation is from Lawless in the pinky-mauve shade “Velvet”. If you’re looking for shimmer, but not plump, try Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in “FU$$Y,” a gorgeous pink shimmer gloss.

Lip gloss picks: LAWLESS Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line Gloss in “Velvet”, Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump Shift in “Big Ego” and Fenty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in “FU$$Y”

Lip Oils:

Want the sheen of a gloss, but not a fan of the texture? Try one of these lip oils! My friend recommends both the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil in “Strawberry” and the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil in “Wonder.” This shade of the Clarins lip oil is a bright, sheer red, while “Wonder” is a higher-coverage mauve-pink shade. “Wonder” also doubles as a bit of a lip stain for those wanting a more long-lasting lip colour.

Lip oil favourites: Clarins Lip Comfort Oil in “Strawberry” and the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil in “Wonder”

Lip Stain:

One friend gave me a lip stain recommendation which is an affordable option from Covergirl. The Covergirl Outlast Lipstain in “Sugey Girl” is a pinky nude colour. It comes in a pen format for ultimate precision and long-lasting results!

I can attest that I’ve seen all of these lip products in action and they don’t disappoint at all! From hydration, to plumping, to staining, there’s something for every lip product-wearer in this list. While I do own some of these lip products already (and have borrowed some of them from my friends), my personal lip combo isn’t featured in this list, so here it is: I love the NYX Retractable Lip Pencil in “Nude Pink” to line my lips, then I go in with a couple drops of the Clarins Water Lip Stain in “Red Water” to give my lips some all-over colour, and then finish with either some Aquaphor Lip Balm or the e.l.f. Glow Reviver Lip Oil in “Rose Envy”. It’s the perfect natural and glossy pink lip look for everyday!

Whatever your favourite lip product is, the next time you’re in the drugstore or at Sephora, I implore you to try one off this list—it just might become your new favourite!
