Strong Female Characters to Look Up To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

After watching so many TV shows and movies there has definitely been a wide range of females portrayed throughout the years. Women have come a long way in finding our own power and it shows in the way females are portrayed in this day and age in the entertainment industry. Here are some of my favourite female characters that are great role models to look up to.

Natasha Romanoff (Marvel)

Surrounded by powerful men, Natasha is definitely at a disadvantage when it comes to her ability to fight but she doesn’t let that stop her from keeping up with the other Avengers. Even though she doesn’t have powers or anything enhancing her abilities, she is able to contribute her part in a fight no matter how strong the enemy is. She is also able to have a calm and level head in most situations and even with a tragic backstory condemning her to a life of doing bad, she was able to overcome it and be the awesome badass fighting for good she is today.

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)

Without her Harry and Ron definitely wouldn’t have lasted as long as they did in their fight against Voldemort. Despite being Muggle-born and teased for it, Hermione is able to stay strong and find any way possible to help and guide her friends. She proves her worth with her amazing intelligence and powerful magic that are fundamental for the victory against evil.

Rachel Zane (Suits)

As a paralegal, Rachel was always looked down on by her peers and even her father because they saw her as not smart enough to become a lawyer. Even though she was the main character, Mike Ross, love interest, she still had great character development and an interesting personality making her more than just the girlfriend. Starting off as a paralegal and ultimately becoming a lawyer herself, Rachel Zane proves to her peers and stubborn father that there is much more to her than just a pretty face and that she’s a lot tougher then she looks.

Fa Mulan (Mulan)

Mulan is another example of a woman who is much stronger than what her male counterparts are so inclined to believe as she breaks stereotypes and fights in honour of her nation. Showing her strength, intelligence and loyalty to her nation, she shows everyone what a woman is capable of. With her determined attitude and compassion for others, she definitely is an important female character to look up to.

Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars)

Veronica Mars is an interesting character because of her sarcastic attitude and stand-offish personality that warrant her as someone that shouldn’t be messed with. In the past, she was an ordinary popular girl but has a complete 180 and becomes the weird lonely kid no one wants to talk to. With her private investigator father, Veronica Mars dives deep into the lives of the rich showing her unmatched intelligence and fearless attitude to solve every case. Her unique personality shows a different side to women and how strength comes in many different ways.

Elle Woods (Legally Blonde)

Elle Woods is different from the other characters on this list as she’s not the traditionally smart female character that is normally seen as the perfect role model. Elle has a ditzy personality, focusing more one how she dresses then strengthening her mind. She follows the stereotypical rich girl trope but it’s her determination to prove to others that she’s more than just a pretty face that qualifies her for this list. No matter how people see Elle, she continues to be her extra self while still working hard to show that she can have a mind of her own.

Dorothy Gale (Wizard of Oz)

While Dorothy may not be the smartest or strongest on this list, it’s her compassion and kindness that makes her a great character to look up to. On her way along the yellow brick road, she meets a few interesting and unusual characters that all have their own insecurities but its Dorothy’s encouragement and compassion that helps each of them as they follow her in her journey. She is able to inspire others and create an accepting environment that allows her friends to flourish and find their confidence making her kindness towards others her strongest power.
