My Favourite 2020 Fall Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

Ahhhh, October. One of the best months. The pumpkins, the fall Starbucks drinks, the red and orange leaves, brisk but comfortable weather, and especially, the peak month for fall fashion. I’d like to thank the four-month lockdown for giving me the opportunity to explore my fashion sense and gain a greater understanding of the ways my clothing can give me confidence. From comfy to chic, check out some of my favourite fall fashion trends that I’ve built from the items in my very own closet!

Train Conductor Hats

Hats are always an amazing way to spice up your look. While in the past I’ve gone for a beanie or a ball cap, these train conductor hats are one fashion item that so many of us have been told: “only look good on certain people”. Who decided that? My theory is, if you want to look good in something, then you will. Once you believe you can rock something, your radiating confidence will convince other people that you indeed, DO rock it!

Modest Lingerie

Does anyone else remember literally a year ago when we wore lingerie to the bar? Me too. And honestly, it was LOOK back then! I think wearing lingerie in public can be so empowering, and while wearing a lace see-through bodysuit isn’t necessarily my flavour anymore, I absolutely love styling these bodysuits on top of t-shirts. Opt for a pair of mom jeans and voila! Perfect for a fancy dinner or a night out.

Colour-Coordinating Masks

You didn’t think I’d make a Fall 2020 Fashion Trends article and NOT include a mask, right?! Hit the streets, pandemic style this year. Although it can be an inconvenience to wear a mask, we all need to do our part, so opt for purchasing masks that match your outfits! You’d be surprised, you might even be EXCITED to wear one!

Monochrome Earth Tones

This outfit, all from H&M, is my comfiest and most stylish outfit! I love earth tones, especially against the beautiful orange and red leaves of fall. The beauty of this outfit is that it’s casual enough to wear to a coffee shop to do something simple, like schoolwork, but cute enough to wear to the pumpkin patch for your annual fall photoshoot!

Collar Layers

I’ve seen this trend become really popular in the summer months, but when worn with a sweater, it’s perfect fall attire! Just grab your old school uniform shirt, an oversized sweater, and a cute skirt or some baggy jeans. I love this look – it’s so versatile and can be worn with any bottoms! Hint: wear the collar-sweater layer with a plaid skirt for Blair Waldorf vibes.

Baggy On Baggy

While the fashion rule is normally “tight on one half, loose on the other”, I think that the new trend of oversized sweaters with oversized jeans is SO cute! I love a good cropped sweater, but since I don’t want to crop all of them, I just wear a sports bra underneath and tuck my sweater under the bra.

Some honourable mentions that I don’t own in my closet: oversized leather jackets, sweater vests, and cow print.

The best part about fashion is that you can always customize it and make it your own! While I know that my “girly” and “soft” outfits aren’t for everyone, you can always turn to Pinterest or Tiktok for more styling tips and trends that are better suited for your own style!
