Let’s be honest: packing is difficult for most people. It certainly is not my strong suit and I realize now that any guidance would have made this process so much easier. After my semester abroad, I’ve compiled a few answers to your potential packing questions that will make this part of your journey smoother and less time consuming.

1. What should I do with my toiletries?

These can take up a good chunk of space in your luggage. I would pack these first because sometimes toiletries can be costly in foreign countries and they might not have the brands/items you need. Travel size versions of your toiletries are also a great investment, in case you travel to more remote areas. You might also want to pack some over-the-counter medicines, just in case.

2. What shoes do I bring?

ALWAYS bring a pair of comfortable and versatile walking shoes.  Choose something that will match most of your outfits so they can double as a pair of daily wears. Depending on the weather, you can also invest in a pair of rain boots or even sandals. Sneakers are a great pack for outdoorsy or fitness activities. Finally, don’t forget to pack at least one pair of fancy footwear (e.g. flats, heels) for potential social events!

3. How do I know what clothes I should bring?

Clothes can be tricky as you’ll want to be prepared for any event that might be thrown at you. First, remember to check the weather of your destinations. With the help of laundry, I’d say you only need at most 8 pairs of pants, whether they are a combination of jeans, shorts, sweatpants or trousers.  In terms of shirts, pack a few tees, a few tanks, a few sweaters, some fitness clothes and you’re good to go! If you’re going somewhere chillier, don’t forget a jacket. Lastly, packing at least one nice outfit for formal or social occasions will ensure you are ready for any event! *Packing tip: roll your clothes to optimize luggage space!

4. How many pairs of socks/underwear do I really need?

At an absolute minimum, I would say nothing short of a week’s supply. These items are small so see how much more you can fit into random spaces in your suitcase after you’re done packing.

5. What tech-related items do I need to bring?

It’s always useful to have a portable luggage scale with you just for caution. International adapters and portable phone chargers are also a must. These will be your lifesavers while you’re travelling the world. (And of course, a camera and a phone!)

6. What kind of bags should I bring?

I always recommend bringing a backpack. It’s great for everyday use for either school or more travelling. A small cross body bag/purse that’s big enough to carry your phone and wallet are also useful for when your backpack becomes too much of a nuisance.

7. Towels? Sheets? Linens?

You should check with your host institution to see if they provide these for you. If not, I’d suggest buying them when you arrive. They can take up quite a bit of room, but if you have space, feel free to throw ‘em in your suitcase!

There you have it, the answers to all your packing worries for studying abroad! Good luck and have fun, my fellow travelers! See you on the flip side!   Â
