How to Have It All Together after Graduation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

I know a good number of people who have no idea how their summer/year/life is going to unfold (myself included) that I thought I should write a PSA on why we should all relax a little.

The reality is that we’ve gone our entire lives with a more or less structured school-life. Albeit, elementary to high school was a hell of a lot more structured than university, the overarching concept still applies: Wake up, do some sort of school-related thing (even if it’s going to QP for a “quick bite to eat” that lasts 2 hours), come back home and expect for more school related things to happen tomorrow.

Then suddenly the structure that we’ve all been accustomed to is now suddenly gone and it feels like a rug is completely pulled from under our feet.

“Okay, so now what?”

For those who aren’t attending more school in the fall or don’t have a job lined up yet, things can feel very overwhelming. From this point on, our lives are even more unpredictable than before, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.

Here’s my two cents on our rude awakening and a lot of it is summed up by my all-time favourite quote:

“We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we project onto the unknown” ~ Teal Swan.

Keep doing what you need to do to reach your goals for this year, whether it’s applying for jobs, relaxing or simply keeping your options open. Whatever you do, try to turn the fear of the unknown into something a little more exciting. It’s simple…but not easy. While it’s so much easier said than done, being mindful of the words and feelings we associate with the future will help us to transform fear into something a little more uplifting.

Remember that you most definitely aren’t alone in feeling overwhelmed with the future and there’s no such thing as “having it all together” from here on out. Detox that phrase out of your life.

Instead, try to enjoy each day with or without the structure that we’ve been used to for so long. One app that really helps me remember to appreciate the little things is “1 Second Everyday”. It allows you to record a second-long video of each day and compiles them into a long “album” of seconds – that way you’re always looking for daily highlights, no matter how big or small!
