“Carb”e Diem: the 8 Emotional Stages of Taking on a Low-Carb Diet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

1) Not a Chance

Bread. Potatoes. Pasta. Rice. Yes please! You could never imagine life without them.

2) I Think I Can

Actually, this could be good for you. You decide that you want to challenge yourself to make a change. You are motivated by your desire to be healthier and to feel better in your own skin.

3) The Emotional Roller-Coaster of Goal Setting

You set goals, timelines and limitations for yourself that are realistic and achievable. As you commit to beginning your lifestyle change, you will feel both a high of empowerment and a low of nostalgia for the foods you will be forgoing.

4) Pinterest!

When you are totally obsessed with Pinterest and now have an excuse to pin a million recipes. CANNOT WAIT TO TRY NEW THINGS!

5) Meal Prep

You get to put your recipes to the test in one exhausting day and then the rest of the week is smooth sailing. You will develop a love/hate relationship with planning meals as it can be exhausting, yet rewarding.

6) Restaurant Restraint

One of the biggest diet challenges is the fact that many restaurants have few, or no, low-carb options. You need to decide how strict you will be to your diet and try to make the best decision for you (the treat yourself vs. stay strong dilemma). Try picking the restaurant when possible, to avoid being surrounded by temptation.

7) Willpower Test

There will be days when you are tested! There is always that one co-worker who brings cake to work, or that friend who wants to stop at the candy store on the way to your movie. Opting out may be tough at first, but as long as you stay focused on your goals of transforming yourself into a happier and healthier you, it will soon get easier to resist temptation.

8) Proud of Your Results

Whether your diet was temporary or becomes your new lifestyle, you will reach that “aha moment” where you can finally see the results you have worked hard to achieve. Feel proud of yourself!
