Kingston has finally gotten its first real dusting of snow, and nothing puts a person in the holiday spirit like looking out the window and seeing white settling on every surface. So as the fall semester reaches an end and everyone finds themselves pushing through these last few weeks of academic torture, here are some timeless Christmas-season movie recommendations for whatever mood you find yourself in.

1. Feel good with ELF

This movie is, without a doubt, a contemporary classic. Will Ferrell’s over-the-top, exuberant portrayal of Buddy the Elf is sure to put a silly smile on anyone’s face. So if you’re feeling down from the chaos of everyday life, this is a go-to movie.

2. Plain old classic: can’t go wrong with IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE

If you have an itch for some black-and-white goodness, this 1946 Frank Capra film is heralded as one of the best traditional Christmas movies. Not only has it been nominated for 6 Academy Awards, but it is also ranked #11 on the original American Film Institute’s list of 100 Greatest American Films of All Time.

3. Looking for laughs? HOME ALONE

What’s more hilarious than watching brilliant 8-year-old Kevin McCallister create dramatic schemes in his own home, in order to stop a pair of wicked burglars? Action and humour crossover in this beloved 1990 movie. And if you’re left wishing for more, you can check out Home Alone 2, 3, and 4.

4. Fall reminiscing can be cured by THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Whether you’re an animation fan or just really missing Halloween, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is the perfect blend of both. That’s right – you can have the best of both worlds with this one.

5. Get your rom-com fix with BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY

This adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (personally, one of my favourite books of all time) depicts the cliché of bumbling, clumsy, girl-next-door Bridget navigating her way through the holiday season. If you’re looking for ugly Christmas sweater parties or Colin Firth’s adorable rendition of Austen’s William Darcy, here you go.

Happy watching, everybody!
