4 Unique Christmas Albums You Should be Listening to

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

It is officially December, which means the Christmas season is now in full swing! It is time to put out the tree, hang up the decorations, serve the cookies and eggnog, and host the ultimate Christmas party for all the people in your life. Now, everyone knows that one of the quintessential aspects of any Christmas gathering is the music. But as much as we love playing “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey on repeat, sometimes the most popular Christmas tunes can get a bit stale.  So here are some Christmas-themed albums that can bring some diversity and freshness to your holiday playlist!

1.Christmas Portrait (1978)- Carpenters

This album is one of my personal favorites to play during Christmas time. The arrangements of the songs are perfect for anyone who is a fan of classic soft rock. With a mix of Christmas classics and original works, this album is a great one to put on for a calm and cozy night by the fireplace with some hot cocoa. The beautiful musical arrangements written by Richard Carpenter and Karen Carpenter’s rich contralto vocals will get anyone into the Christmas spirit!

2. Home for Christmas (2012) and Christmas (2015)- Celtic Woman

This next pick is actually two separate albums, but they are both equally deserving of a listen. Celtic Woman takes a wide range of classic Christmas songs and puts an unconventional twist on them, giving each a unique Celtic style arrangement. Both albums also have a good balance of accompanied and acapella renditions, as well as stunning vocal harmonies from the main band members. These albums are perfect for those who are in the mood for a different take on their favorite Christmas tunes!

3. A Very She & Him Christmas (2011)- She & Him

Here is a fantastic choice for a more modern and quirky take on Christmas music. The soft and upbeat musical arrangements and Zooey Deschanel’s light, jazzy vocals are a must for any holiday party playlist. This group also has another Christmas album with even more great remakes of well-known Christmas songs, so be sure to check them out. Also, if you’re simply a Zooey Deschanel fan, then her work here is the perfect choice for you!

4. Jackson’s Christmas Album (1970)- The Jackson 5

If you are searching for a more lively take on Christmas music, look no further than this Jackson 5 offering for your next holiday gathering. This album is also the ideal choice for any fans of the Motown era of music. The energetic musical style and the soaring vocals of a young Michael Jackson and his brothers make it the perfect album to really get the crowd excited and ready to dance the night away!
