4 Style Tips to Get You Through the Winter

Maintaining your personal style through the winter months can be nearly as tricky as navigating the ice- covered sidewalks of campus. In the heart of winter, it can be more than difficult to imagine a more appropriate outfit than your warmest sweats. However, when wearing bulky sweaters gets redundant,  these tips will help you maintain a sense of personal style while still keeping nice and toasty.

1. Layers

Your mom has been harping on about layering since you were a kid. “Throw on a sweater!” or “Shouldn’t you be wearing a full-sleeve under that?” was the soundtrack to many winters. Of course, we hate to admit it but she was onto something. Layers are a very quick and easy way to add some warmth on the particularly chilly days, without looking bulky. Throwing a collared shirt underneath a knit sweater is helpful (and chic!) in ways you wouldn’t believe. Cardigans, button-up shirts (even your favourite cozy plaid), thin turtlenecks and long sleeve shirts can be worked interchangeably into different outfits to add warmth without adding too much weight. What makes them even more appealing is that they can often be removed if you find your lecture hall a little too toasty.

2. Beanies

This couldn’t be a cold-weather style list without the inclusion of beanies. A beanie is a fantastic option for a number of reasons. First, the functionality. Obviously, hats keep your head warm and who doesn’t like that? Second, they’re aesthetically pleasing. They’re relaxed, they’re cute, they’re fashionably acceptable and they can be worked into outfits easily. Because they work well with outfits, you’re safe to leave it on through class, so you don’t have to worry about the usual hat head fallout. Something slouchy and less form fitting, in really any colour that works with your main stock of outfits is ideal. Perhaps a neon colour if you’re really looking to liven up an outfit!

3. Socks of varied lengths

A sister to layering, socks are another great way to add warmth and a little something extra. A pair of coloured socks popping out of the top of a boot gives your outfit more life. They also provide a little more room for artistic freedom. You don’t really get a choice on the waterproof footwear or the extra-heavy parka, but you can play around with the socks.

4. Scarves

Scarves are an easy sell. They’re warm, very cute and the right one livens up your coat just right. Fun and functional accessories are always a yes. The nicest thing is that there are plenty of acceptable options; the classic plaid, a comfy knit, or the popular circle scarf. Like a beanie, scarves are just an extra means of personalization and fun added to winter wear.
