The 10 Best Things About the Christmas Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

1. Family & Friends

Life is busy and there isn’t always time for the people you love to gather together, especially with those who live far away. The holidays are full of Christmas parties and family gatherings, so you get to spend as much time as possible with all the people you love.

2. The Giving Season

The holidays, though enjoyable, can be a very hard time for some families. Many people recognize this and step up to help, giving back as much as they can in the holiday season. This can be done in so many ways, from food banks to a monetary donation. It’s wonderful that the Christmas season inspires so many people to give back.

3. Decorations

If I could have Christmas decorations in my house all year long, I would, because it adds so much cheer to a room. A wreath to make your entrance welcoming, a tree to make your living room cozy, and a holly-covered stair banner to make your trip upstairs just a bit more festive. No matter what it is, it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

4. Music

I think it might be a scientific fact that Christmas music is the happiest noise a person can hear. You just can’t help yourself from humming along with a smile. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Josh Groban, Michael Bublé, and Mariah Carey for their contributions to the holiday season.

5. Movies

December is a time when the winter chill sets in, and there is no better cure than a nice cup of tea and a good movie to snuggle up to. From heartwarming movies like It’s a Wonderful Life to comedies like Christmas Vacation, there is something to watch for every mood that will add some cheer to a cold winter day.

6. Winter

There’s nothing better than waking up to a beautiful winter wonderland. It means a possible snow day, and you could go skiing, have a snowball fight, or make some classic snow angels. Whatever the winter activity, you know you’ll enjoy it.

7. Gift Giving

I don’t think there’s anything better than watching someone’s face light up when you give them a gift, especially if you put a lot of thought into it. Christmas is a time when you get to do that for all your friends and family. What could be better?

8. Traditions

Every family and group of friends has a different tradition. Some do a Secret Santa, others do potlucks – whatever it is, it always has a special place in our hearts. It’s something you can look forward to every year.

9. Food

The holidays are a time of baking and feasts. Most holiday gatherings involve some form of food, whether it’s a cookie exchange or a potluck dinner. No matter what, it’s going to be good and you know you’re going to leave with a smile and a full stomach.

10. Christmas Cheer

Christmas is a time of joy, and you can feel that in the air wherever you go. You can’t help but smile when you see a kid take a picture with Santa or watch a couple go ice skating together. This is even supported by the Grinch, who demanded that “there’ll be no sad faces on Christmas!”
