Wait, You Had To Run Out Of Lecture Because Of What?!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

Let’s face it, we’ve all heard those embarrassing lecture stories. You know the ones I’m talking about, where someone trips in front of the whole class, or accidentally sits in the professor’s seat.  We’ve all sighed in relief that it wasn’t us who suffered through those embarrassing moments. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t get to have that sigh-of-relief moment, and I’m here to tell all of you who were unlucky as I was, not to fear. Even in the moment if think you will die from embarrassment, you will move past it! Trustn me, I’m the living proof.

What happened?

I was sitting in my biology lecture when all of a sudden my nose started running. I didn’t think much of it since I was already sick, until a drop of blood fell onto my sleeve. Yep, that’s right. I got a bloody nose in the middle of lecture. By this time, it had begun to bleed profusely, so I jumped out of my seat and ran down the stairs covering my bloody nose (gross, I know). When I finally got out of the lecture hall, I walked as fast as I could to the bathroom trying to avoid any attention. By then, almost everyone in the hallway was staring at me. I was the girl with blood all over her shirt. No big deal or anything.

Finally, when I got my nose to stop bleeding, I called my mom because moms definitely always know what to do. The first thing she did was not offer comfort like I had expected, but laugh at me. To be honest, in that moment I couldn’t help but laugh too. It was very unfortunate but knowing my luck, I should have expected something like this. My shirt was pretty bloody at that point and after talking with my mom, we both decided that since there were only ten minutes left of class, I needed to wait until it was over to go grab my stuff. Basically I spent the last ten minutes of class hiding in the bathroom.

At first, I was extremely embarrassed, but then I realized that just about no one in that class would remember me next time. Honestly, I was already laughing at myself while walking back to my dorm. So, if you get to be that super lucky person that has one of these embarrassing college stories, don’t forget to laugh at yourself! My experience has ended up being something that my roommate and I constantly laugh about together. Just remember, things happen and you just have to roll with it.  I even use my story as an ice breaker sometimes and people always seem to get a laugh out of it.

Advice going forward?

Don’t take life too seriously especially under these conditions! It’s so important to learn to laugh at yourself sometimes. Like I said before, that day actually turned into a funny story that still makes me laugh. If I learned anything from that day though it’s to have a sense of humor about these types of situations, and to always, bring an extra change of shirt! I still do so,  even though it’s been two months.
