True crime miniseries are truly having a moment in the spotlight right now. The latest ones include: The Thing About Pam, which stars Renee Zellweger as Pam Hupp, the woman who murdered her best friend just for the insurance money. Then we have The Dropout starring Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes. This show follows Elizabeth, and how she swindled her way into becoming the youngest and wealthiest self-made billionaire when her company Thernos was a complete fraud. Lastly, we have the Shondaland-produced show Inventing Anna. Inventing Anna follows the story of Anna Delvey and how she convinced everyone she was a German heiress who could get anything she ever wanted. Anna was far from an heiress and her lies eventually caught up to her and the show follows all the events leading up to her arrest from not only Anna’s perspective but also the perspective of her former friends.

The latest crime series that has graced our screens is the new show called The Girl from Plainville. This show which is a Hulu original stars Elle Fanning, Colton Ryan, and Chloe Sevigny. The Girl from Plainville flashes back and forth from between the past and present day which includes the aftermath of Conrad’s suicide and Michelle’s arrest all the back to the past when Conrad met Michelle and all the events leading up to his suicide and how Michelle convinced him to do it. Out of all the miniseries airing right now, this crime was the only one that I was completely familiar with before I ever watched the show. Because I had been following this case for a while, when I found out they were making it into a drama series I was excited to see how they were going to do it. I was optimistic for this show, but it fell a little flat for me. While I understand that some things need to be dramatized for a good plot line, it seems like most things that are happening in this show are a little too fake. One thing that was weird for me was the musical number that happened in Episode 4. There was this musical number between Michelle and Conrad that just felt weird and unnecessary.

This case has multiple documentaries that include key details about this case and some even interview Conrad’s family. After watching the Hulu show, it seems like the writers just got their information through other people’s gossip rather than taking time to do the research on the case. I do have to say the acting in this show is good and it does save it from being completely horrible. Overall, the show brings drama but if you are looking for something that accurately portrays the Michelle Carter case, then this show is not for you.
