Low Maintenance Plants to Enjoy in Your College Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

Keeping plants can be an enjoyable way to make your living space livelier and beautiful. Although, as a busy college student, having more responsibilities often goes unwanted. I have compiled a list of plants that anyone can purchase that require very little upkeep.

Cactus

Cactus plants rarely require water and require an average amount of sunlight to prosper. If you forget to water your cactus for an extended period of time, you can rest assured that it will likely be just fine. Additionally, you can find these plants at a multitude of connivence stores, and they are not extremely expensive especially when they are small.

Orchid

This may be a surprise to some, but orchid plants are quite easy to care for in that they don’t need much water. A few tablespoons of water, once per week, will be sufficient. Additionally, they only need an average amount of sunlight.

Aloe Plant

Not only are aloe plants especially easy to take care of and require very little water just like the cactus, but they are also a useful plant. The stalks of the aloe can be used to treat sunburn and moisturize the skin, and they grow back once removed.

Spider Plant

Spider plants are both easy to take care of and have a very interesting regenerative way of growing. Once a spider plant is mature, they create “baby” spider plants that can be removed and repotted to regenerate a whole new plant. They are also easy to take care of and only need to be watered once a week, with an average amount of sunlight to keep them happy and healthy.

I personally really enjoy having plants in my living space, even as a busy college student who doesn’t always have a lot of time to take care of them. This list compiles some of my favorite options for people like me who enjoy plants but aren’t looking for options that require a substantial amount of time and care.
