Five Spine-Chilling, Sadistic, and Scary Shows and Movies to Binge During Spooky Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

Spooky season is upon us and what better way to get in the mood than be spooked by these five movies and shows.

It Chapter Two (2019)

Remember the clown crisis of October 2016 when people were running around as clowns terrifying the public? Well could you imagine if those clowns not only scared you but ate you for dinner too? In the sequel to IT (2017), It Chapter Two (2019) takes the cake in scary, hungry, killer clowns on a mission to terrify the town of Derry, Maine. Pennywise, the clown, comes back brewing revenge on the kids who defeated him after 27 years. The kids, now adults, need to reunite after decades of being apart in order to find a way to stop the evil clown for good. Overwhelmed by childhood trauma and fear, the group must find the courage to defeat Pennywise who is more powerful now than ever before, or they will float too.

Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark (2019)

One of my favorite things to do during the Halloween season is sharing scary stories, but not if those stories turned into a horrifying reality. In the film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, a group of teens stumble into the haunted mansion of Sarah Bellows, where they find her book of scary stories inspired by her treacherous life and dark secrets. This book of stories turns the life of these teens upside down when their worst nightmares become their destiny in the near future, so it is up to them to end the horrors of the stories and allow Sarah Bellows to rest in peace.

Annabelle Comes Home (2019)

Many girls play with dolls as a kid whether it be Barbie, Bratz, or an American Girl Doll, but many of those dolls are not possessed by evil demons who are hellbent on creating fear and pain. In the seventh movie of the Conjuring Universe, the haunted doll takes her opportunity after being released a friend of the Warrens ten-year-old daughter’s babysitter to awaken all of the room’s evil spirits. This night gave Annabelle the chance she needed in order to wreak the most havoc she could, leaving everyone in the Warren house in danger of Annabelle’s intentions. The only way to stop Annabelle is to lock her away, and if they can’t accomplish that, they could be the spirits next victims.

American Horror Story (since 2011)

Everyone has their fears of the uncertain, and in this horror series each season is composed of wide known fears of society. Murder, ghosts, witches craft and many other bone chilling elements are incorporated in every season. This show has many twisted topics for their seasons such as: Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freakshow, Hotel, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, and 1984. This series is perfect for someone who likes a good scare and can follow a storyline because many of the seasons tie together in certain ways.

A Haunting of Hill House (2018)

Haunted houses can be a very fun fall activity, partially because of knowing what’s happening is not real and that you can go home to a ghost free environment but for the Crain family their life is a never-ending haunted house. Paranormal experiences can be very life changing but that is an understatement for Crain family living in the most haunted house in the century. This show is a modern take on the Shirley Jackson novel, which begins with the siblings of the Crain family as kids who experience everything that goes bump in the night, but this house began to change everyone who lived in it. The house left horrible memories for the children and it cost the life of their mother, forever changing the family. Many years later the children who are now adults are lured back together due to another loss in the family thanks to Hill House. The siblings are left to face the fears that lurk in their heads from the past in order to gain closure and get the answers they were looking for. This show announced earlier this year that the second season of the show is coming.
