Bonjour, Emily In Paris : A New Netflix Series

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

Like many little girls, I was always fascinated with the idea of Paris.  Even until now, I have this huge Eiffel Tower painting in my room, and I wanted so badly to be eating macarons at a local bakery there or taking pictures at the tourist spots.

I started taking French in middle school and took it for a total of six years.  When I began watching the Netflix show Emily in Paris this past week, my dreams of being in Paris were revived, despite the very small chance I could even go back there in the near future due to the pandemic.

I have only watched a bit of the show so far, but I’ll give you some background on the general idea behind it.

Emily works in marketing and specializes in social media.  She gets an unexpected job opportunity to work in Paris when her boss gets pregnant, and she must go instead. (Pretty lucky, right?!)

Well, at first, she is excited, but she also has to get accustomed to the French culture. She has a rough start because she doesn’t know how to speak French.

Nonetheless, Emily posts on her Instagram and slowly grows a fan base. However, throughout the first few episodes, she is not well-liked by the new marketing agency she works for because she is an American.  Many of them are rude to her and do not agree with her ‘bold’ ideas.  But she does meet new friends and develop a few love interests in addition to expanding her French knowledge.  For example, she learns that in a building, there is always a ground floor, and the first floor is the one above that.

If you’re a lover of rom-coms, you’ll probably enjoy watching and laughing at this series because she’s really just a young adult finding her way through life’s obstacles but in Paris, which makes it ten times better. The plot is interesting, and the locations they filmed at in Paris were exquisite!  With that being said, I can’t wait to continue the rest of the series, and you should definitely look into it in your free time. Au revoir! (Goodbye!)
