As May arrived, the Pepsico Theatre welcomed the Purchase Dance Company for their 2011 Spring Dance Concert. Four famous females, both nationally and locally, choreographed performances for this production.

Tony Award and Emmy winning choreographer Twyla Tharp will present “Sweet Fields.” Nelly van Bommel, who was recently named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2010 will also showcase her piece, “Rondinella.”

Wallie Wolfgruber, Purchase’s new director of dance, choreographed her piece,  “Dream Support,” and Bettijane Sills, another dance conservatory celebrity, will show “Masquerade.”

According to Wolfgruber, these performances feature the works of four female choreographers from various generations with different ideas regarding choreography and creativity.

“This program highlights the technical and artistic versatility and virtuosity of the student performers of the Purchase Dance Company,” said Wolfgruber.

“The first weekend of performances went really well,” said dancer Natasha Poon Woo. “Opening night had a really supportive and enthusiastic crowd, which always gives great energy to the performers. I think that we all felt a bit jittery and nervous, which is natural, but more importantly the excitement fueled everyone to dance to the fullest,” she said.

These Purchase performances are still in production this weekend at the Pepsico Theatre in the Performing Arts Center. If you are interested, there are night shows at 8:00 p.m. on May 6th and 7th and an afternoon matinee at 3:00 PM on May 8th. Tickets cost $5.

Christie is a sophomore journalism major at Purchase College in NY, but she’s a Jersey Girl at heart. When she isn’t studying (or being sarcastic), she spends her summers selling crafty jewelry on Long Beach Island and making coffee for her superiors at Parker and Partner’s Marketing Resources. She’s a sucker for debates, sushi, and a really good book. Her dream job (this week) would be at the Village Voice, but she’d be happy with a byline and paycheck. She hopes to make HerCampus bigger and better than ever at Purchase and is excited for the chance to work with these lovely HC ladies.
