The 6 Winter Fashion Necessities You Need to Survive the Purchase Slush

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purchase chapter.

Early in my freshman days of college, whenever there would be a blizzard, I’d simply throw on an over-sized hooded sweater, my winter battered Timberland boots, and a pair of sweats. Now that attire alone could be satisfactory to set forth onto the ice laden pathways of Purchase College, but who says we ladies must sacrifice our sense of style for sufficiency?

Winter Fashion Necessity Number 1: Play with Color.
Apparently, Purchase student Natalia Fogarty seems to think not. “You don’t have to let the snow dictate your style, just mix it up with shades.” Winter fashion necessity number one: color! Adorned in brown, calf-high cowboy boots, deep blue double-threaded tights, a vibrant orange high-waist pencil skirt, and a black swoop-neck blouse, Fogarty decided to keep the winter blast from putting a freeze on her dress code.

Winter Fashion Necessity Number 2: A Form Fitting Coat.

“Of course I wouldn’t wear this [outfit] without a jacket,” Fogarty says while gesturing towards her crème-colored fo-fur lined bubble jacket. Winter fashion essential number two: a form-fitting coat. While a coat may seem obvious to most students, a lot turn to the bulbous and frumpy. Kristen Barbagallo, a sophomore says, “Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you’re limited to something constricted or baggy,” Pausing to sip some of her hot chocolate, Kristen continues. “A jacket with a heavy feeling to it like a pea coat keeps you both warm, and stylish.”

Winter Fashion Necessity Number 3: Embellished Scarves
Jackie Whickline, friend of Barbagallo, comments on Kristen’s attire. “I think detailed scarves are a cool way to show off your style.” Snowyday essential number three: embellished scarves. What better way to standout amongst the mass piles of snow than with an attention grabbing detailed scarf? Kristen comments, “I love the design alone, but the fact that I’m warm is a plus!”

Winter Fashion Necessity Number 4: Double Stitched Jeggings
As for keeping your legs both toasty and fashionable, Isabella Da’ Silva, a sophomore, expresses her love for our snowy day essential number four: double- stitched jeggings. “[Jeggings] are my really comfortable excuse not to wear tight jeans,” Da’Silva says while laughing. “They come in almost any color and style, and feel pretty warm.”

Winter Fashion Necessity Number 5: Musher’s Hat
When asked about what keeps a Purchase girl’s head cozy, Da’ Silva mentions the oh-so-trendy snowy day necessity number five: a musher’s hat. “The furrier the hat, the better it feels.” Da’Silva says with a smile.

Winter Fashion Necessity Number 6: Waterproof UGG Boots
Although a furry hat is always nice, what to wear to keep your toes feeling just as warm? Snowy day necessity number six: waterproof UGG boots. Freshman and fellow UGG boot wearer Michel O’ Halleran says, “I can actually get a drop of slush on my boot now and not worry about it staining or my foot getting cold.”

With just a few of these additions to your closet, it is proven that even on the slushiest of snow days here at Purchase College, it’s still possible to stay snug and stylish.

Christie is a sophomore journalism major at Purchase College in NY, but she’s a Jersey Girl at heart. When she isn’t studying (or being sarcastic), she spends her summers selling crafty jewelry on Long Beach Island and making coffee for her superiors at Parker and Partner’s Marketing Resources. She’s a sucker for debates, sushi, and a really good book. Her dream job (this week) would be at the Village Voice, but she’d be happy with a byline and paycheck. She hopes to make HerCampus bigger and better than ever at Purchase and is excited for the chance to work with these lovely HC ladies.
