Yes, We’re Currently Obsessed with “Fashion Star”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Fashion Star, NBC’s newest reality show, takes the concept of instant gratification to a whole new level. The show features 14 aspiring designers competing for the title of “Fashion Star” plus a $6,000,000 contract with either H&M, Macy’s, or Saks Fifth Ave.

Fashion icons Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson and John Varvatos mentor the contestants as they are challenged to create three original pieces of clothing to display in weekly fashion shows. The shows are put on before a live audience, as well as buyers from three of the largest retailers in America.

At the end of each contestant’s mini-show, the buyers have an opportunity to make an offer for one of the featured pieces to be sold in their store. If no bids are placed, the contestant is at risk for elimination.

The best part? Any design that receives an offer is placed on sale immediately online and in stores the next day.

What we love about this show:

The host: Supermodel Elle MacPherson hosts and produces “Fashion Star.” Her stunning beauty and Australian accent alone make the show that much more obsession-worthy.

Relatable contestants: The contestants on “Fashion Star” come from all walks of life, from a stay-at-home mom selling clothes at her local community market, to a bartender determined to design for girls on a budget, to an engineer turned self-taught designer. No matter what, you’re guaranteed to find someone to root for.

Inside look into the retail business: Unlike any other shows before it, “Fashion Star” gives viewers a sneak peak at the business side of fashion. These buyers get to decide what clothing is put on the racks in major retail stores, ultimately dictating the trends of the seasons, and you get to watch it all happen.

Instant improvement to our closets: See an outfit on the runway, fall in love with it, and buy it instantly. Um, hello? Can we ask for anything better?
