Why You Should Be Excited for the New Beauty and the Beast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

A tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast is one of the most beloved Disney films of all time. The cartoon version first came out in 1990 and has won the hearts of little girls (and big girls) ever since. When the two worlds of a studious young girl and horrifying beast collide, magic is created! If you were blown away by the live action: Cinderella that came out in 2015 like I was (I’m pretty sure I cried through the whole film), hold on tight because Beauty and the Beast is going to be one magical ride!

The Cast

First of all, Emma Watson as Belle just completely slays my life because she fully embodies the character of Belle. While she is famous for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, Watson is a big activist for women empowerment and gender equality. Much like Belle, Watson doesn’t just care about falling in love but sees knowledge as power too as she graduated from Brown University in 2014. Emma Watson is the perfect role model for young girls, making her the perfect Disney princess.

The Beast is played by Dan Stevens. Dan Stevens is best known for his role as Matthew Crawley in Downtown Abbey. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll understand that one of the saddest episodes was when his character was tragically killed off. That being said, we are so happy to see him in this role! Though we won’t be able to recognize him for most of the film, hopefully the transformation at the end will be dazzling!

Luke Evans and Josh Gad will play the comic duo of Gaston and Le Fou. You may know Evans from Fast and Furious 6 or The Hobbit. And you most definitely know Gad from Disney’s own Frozen as Olaf! While this comical role may be a first for Evans, we have a strong feeling Gad will fit right in.

That’s not all; even the characters from the castle will have big name voice-overs. Ewan McGregor will be voicing Lumiere, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth and a new character, a grand piano, will be added and voiced by Stanely Tucci from The Hunger Games and The Devil Wears Prada.

The Set

Though we don’t have too many images of what the set will look like, the few we do show great promise for the whole film. The castle looks dark and mysterious on the outside and gorgeous on the inside.

The Music

Unlike the other live action films created, Beauty and the Beast will be a musical! Though no songs from the Broadway show will be included, you can expect all the songs from the animated movie plus a few new ones. If you haven’t watched the trailer already, the music in that is sure to give you goose bumps.

The cast, the sets and the music are sure to be magical in this remaking of a classic Disney film which is why you should be very excited! The film is set to be released March 17, 2017, so prepare yourselves to be thrown back to your childhood and feel young at heart again! Happy watching collegiattes!
