What Song is Your Staple Winter Piece?

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Although I am not a huge fan of the winter, I am a huge fan of the holiday season. Because of this, December rolling around means me pulling out my perfect holiday playlist and shamelessly putting “Jingle Bell Rock” on repeat.

I am also the biggest advocate for layering and all things winter style has to bring. From corduroy finally being perfectly acceptable again to darker reds in fashion rotation, it is arguably my best-dressed time of the year.

I am also quite the advocate for song association. While you’re pulling out your winter staple pieces this year yet again, maybe turn on a song or two and really get into the winter vibe!

Corduroy Jacket: “It’s NICE to have a friend” by taylor swift

My favorite staple piece is my corduroy jacket from Madewell. Corduroy fits so well in the winter, not only for its warmth but unique effects on a simple jean outfit. It’s comfortable and feels like home to me, just like this song by one of my favorite artists. With tones of snowfall in this one, it reminds me of mid-December and holiday excitement.

Gingham scarf: “Hands down- reprise” by the greeting committee

Although gingham can be argued to be a summer pattern, I think it is cutest in the winter. My gingham scarf is a sweet reminder of sunshine that also provides the warmth needed in the winter. It is another comforting piece for me, just like any scarf, really. This song describes these feelings well with its soft notes and love song lyrics dedicated to the singer’s real life partner.

oatmeal beanie: “holiday-ish” by the regrettes (feat. dylan minnette)

Once the snow comes down, the beanies and hats come out. They’re cute, stylish and protective. Easily the best package all in one. This song just sounds like snowfall and makes me excited for the cloudy skies and silence that comes after a good snow storm.

Patterned Tights: “Cold wind” by jaguar sun

As a skirt and dress person, tights are my go-to in cold weather. Patterned tights are a cute addition to any outfit, but unfortunately don’t do much to shield from the cold if they’re sheer. This song embodies the cold wind your legs will probably feel when sporting them out. However, just like this song, it’s always worth giving a try.

black Booties: “Hannah hunt” by vampire weekend

My shoes in the winter consist of my converse and an assortment of black booties. From platforms to regular heels to flat weather-proof boots, they are fit for the weather and for a stylish look. Steve Madden always brings out the best for me. Walking to this angsty song by Vampire Weekend in your favorite black boots is a huge power move.

Favorite Long sleeves: “Youuu” by coin

I think when I’m finally able to pull out my favorite long sleeves, I am finally able to ring in the winter season. I find long sleeves so therapeutic. They’re like a warm fireplace crackling the on Christmas Eve. I also just feel great in them and they make me want to dance around to this song by COIN everyday this winter.

cable knit sweater: “She plays bass” by beabadoobee

This song reminds me of early December as it’s slowly getting colder and soon I am going to have to pull out the chunky winter jacket. Until then though, I have my navy blue cable knit sweater that reminds me of my high school uniform, but so much better. By far, it is one of my favorite timeless staple pieces.

Whether you’re dreading the winter or have been waiting anxiously for it, I think we can all agree these few pieces really make the season. I know I cannot wait to see what people do with them this year!

I am currently a Junior at Penn State studying Biobehavioral Health. Besides school and writing for Her Campus, I love all kinds of music and am currently learning to play the ukulele! In my free time, I love to play with my dogs as well as watch my favorite shows, New Girl and Glee.
