At the start of January, I finally decided to try birth control. After years of hesitation to start it, I finally looked into it and got evaluated for the right kind for me.

At first, I was hesitant.

For many years, I was debating going on birth control. I know so many people who benefited from it immensely — their period cramps lessened, their acne went away and of course, they did not have to worry as much about pregnancy. This all sounded great! But, I also heard horror stories like people gaining weight, having mood swings, blood clots, depressive thoughts etc. Not to mention, the side effects manual given with oral contraceptives is longer than a Cheesecake Factory menu.

With all the myths and stories I’ve heard, I avoided trying any form of female contraceptives for the sake of my health. But fast forward to this past December, I did thorough research and decided it was time to try.

Starting out.

While scrolling through social media, I’ve stumbled upon Pill Club many times. Pill Club is a telehealth platform that provides birth control prescriptions at affordable rates. All you have to do is take their health quiz and they will find a contraceptive that fits your description. Getting my birth control online had me hesitant, but insurance covered everything and the results have been great thus far.

What they offer.

Every three months, Pill Club sends you a care package with three months’ worth of your prescription, along with other goodies covered by your insurance. In my first care package, I received pads, female condoms and eight emergency contraceptives. Without the help of insurance, this all would’ve been hundreds of dollars. Plan B pills are also $50 dollars each and I was able to have them for free. Even if you are paying out of pocket, Pill Club has low and affordable prices.

How I feel on the pill.

I am currently on my third pack of Vienva and have little to no side effects. The only negative effect it had on me was I was a bit moody during my first month on it. I also noticed my skin getting clearer and my period being lighter than usual. Many women have to go through trial and error to find the right pill for them, but I got lucky. The pill I was prescribed was the perfect fit for me.

Overall.

I am very glad that I finally gave birth control and Pill Club a chance. Now I don’t have to worry about my skin being uneven, getting pregnant or severe menstrual cramps. Going to a medical professional in person should always be your first resort, but if you are like me, an out-of-state college student with a busy schedule and limited insurance, the Pill Club would be great for you.

This experience taught me to always listen to my body and not immediately judge a product based on negative reviews.
