The 5 Best Rom-Coms For You To Enjoy This Summer

While romantic comedies can be watched year-round, my favorites are typically set in the summer. There’s nothing quite like calming down to watch a movie after spending all day in the sun.

“Palm Springs” (2020)

Hulu defines the movie as a “drama” and “comedy,” but fails to advertise the romantic aspect between the two main characters, Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti). Conveniently set at a wedding in Palm Springs, California, the film is complete with summer scenery, color saturation and beachy vibes.

The plot is much thicker than a typical romantic comedy, consisting of a Groundhog Day (1993) premise and intense anger from each character involved. The humor aspect is very strong, although there is an undeniable chemistry between Samberg and Milioti. I wouldn’t even consider watching in fall, winter or spring.

“50 First Dates” (2004)

Easily found on Amazon Prime Video, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are seen together in “50 First Dates,” a movie surrounding amnesia, affection and amusement. Henry Roth (Sandler) uses Lucy Whitmore’s (Barrymore) extreme lack of remembrance as a chance to re-fall in love with her every day, after a history of jumping from tourist to tourist. Set in Hawaii, the passion of the two is just as appealing as the summer feel. The film screams tropical romance, while also making the plot somewhat serious to round out the story.

“Blended” (2014)

To keep on theme with both Sandler and Barrymore, “Blended” is the sweetest movie set in the summer. The premise surrounds a blind date gone wrong, followed by an unplanned trip to Africa together. Jim (Sandler) and Lauren (Barrymore) bring their children along on a vacation, inevitably being forced to spend time together. The arguments and awkwardness only bring the two closer together, blending a family with a perfect vacation atmosphere.

“The Wrong Missy” (2020)

Netflix holds this incredibly underrated film, complete with audible laughing moments, David Spade’s quirky acting and intensely inappropriate innuendos. Despite the title being sadly underrated, Tim Morris (Spade) invites his soulmate to a work-related retreat in Hawaii (summer!). Once on the plane, he realizes he texted the wrong Missy to join him (Molly Sims). After being stuck together and pained by embarrassing Missy moments, the couple finally becomes fond of each other. The vacation cinematography is stunning, and the jokes are endless. There are little to no heavy, dramatic moments in the film, which makes the vibes extremely light and easy to watch in one sitting.

“Just Go With It” (2011)

Sandler has mastered comedy, along with romantic comedy, and this movie is proof. Starring Jennifer Aniston and set at a vacation resort, Danny (Sandler) meets the love of his life, but finds himself in trouble when she discovers his fake wedding ring. While taking her on a luxurious beach trip, he invites Katherine (Aniston), his assistant, to play the role of the fake ex-wife. With hilarious twists and turns at every scene, Sandler shows his comedic genius through the plot. It’s funny. It’s romantic. It’s good to watch with the parents. This film has it all, while making you feel every emotion.

Every time I sit down to watch a movie, I end up choosing a rom-com, so I would call myself a very credible source. If you’re looking for something funny and feel-good that makes you want to settle down and get married, one of these five is exactly what you’re looking for.
