In the fashion world, I would call myself more of an observer than a doer. Window shopping and scrolling through fashion websites are what you might find me doing rather than strutting around campus in the hottest trends.

Whether you do one or the other (or both), it is so fun to guess what the latest trends will be. Fall on campus can either bring out the best layering outfits you’ve laid your eyes on or outfits that look like the person has just rolled out of bed, either way, fashion is fashion.

2022 is the year where old trends meet new ones, so here’s what I think are going to be the biggest trends of the season.

Flannels

Flannels are a fall classic for a reason and they are the simplest way to get into the fall spirit. They are so versatile that you can style them up or down whether you are making a trip to the pumpkin patch or going out to dinner. They are perfect for layering and spicing up your shirts and tank tops you refuse to leave behind with the hot weather.

Dresses and Skirts

Fall has the perfect weather where it is warm enough to wear a dress or a skirt but cold enough to stylishly layer it. Layering is one of the areas that fall fashion shines in, so you can’t go wrong with putting on a pair of tights underneath your summer dress to give it an autumn-fashion spin.

Cargo and Parachute Pants

For a jeans alternative, cargo or parachute pants seems the way to go this autumn season. Looser pants like these have become extremely popular recently.

They aren’t limited to a range of colors, like jeans, so experimenting with different colors is essential if you go shopping for a pair. Don’t be afraid to widen your fall color palette.

Grandpa SWeaters

It seems like oversized, patterned sweaters are springing into popularity. A combination of love for thrifting and oversized items, comes the grandpa sweater, which lovingly gets its name for being similar to sweaters you might see your grandpa sport. The sweaters are big and comfy, perfect for any kind of weather that fall brings.

Vests

Cardigan, jean, buttoned, leather, patterned, you name it, all kinds of vests are coming back as essential layering pieces this year. For a more cozy look, going with a fuzzy cardigan is the clear option to keep you warm as it gets closer to winter. Jean and leather vests are an homage to ‘90s fashion trends, so throw one of those on for a simple yet sophisticated, throwback look.

Afghan Jackets

This ‘70s-inspired jacket trend is on its way to the racks of your favorite stores this fall. Afghan jackets, made popular by Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles, seem to be making a huge comeback this year. The beginning of fall weather is perfect for a light jacket, and an afghan jacket adds the perfect amount of style and texture to an otherwise plain outfit.

Fall is made for experimenting with so many different trends, so even if you don’t get around to trying any of these out, there is so much room to create outfits.

Fashion is meant to be an extension of you, so if these trends aren’t for you, that’s no big deal, always do what is comfortable for you, because as they say, you don’t fit the clothes, the clothes fit you.
