With the holidays just around the corner, the season of gift giving and eating unimaginable amounts of scrumptious festive foods is just getting underway! With this recipe found on Pinterest (originally pinned by currycollaborative.com) that is similar to the ever so popular cake pops from Starbucks, you’ll be on the fast track to becoming the most welcomed guest at the party when you step in the door with these heavenly red velvet cake pops. They’re a perfect, yet simple tasty treat to give your friends and family!

First, gather your ingredients. This treat doesn’t require buying a lot of ingredients since the cake is the main part of it, which only requires a box of cake mix, 3 eggs, 1 ½ cups water, and 1/3 vegetable oil. The cake ingredients are usually ones that people already have, so that saves you some money! Other than a box of your favorite flavor of cake mix, you’ll need:

-32 ounces of candy coating of chocolate squares
– Lollipop sticks
– 16 ounces of frosting
– Styrofoam
-Any sprinkles or decorations of your choice!

Now for the steps:

1. Bake the cake as you normally would according to the directions on the back of the box, and be sure to fully let it cool.

2. Crumble the cake up into a large bowl and add in half of the frosting container (be sure the frosting is softened)

3. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper

4. Mold the cake/frosting mixture into walnut-sized balls. They should be smooth and have minimal cracks! Place cake balls on cookie sheet and freeze for 20 minutes.

5. Start off melting a small amount of the candy coating morsels or chocolate squares in the microwave. Dip the end of each lollipop stick into the chocolate then stick it into a cake ball, making sure it’s about half of the way in. Let sit for a couple minutes.

6. Melt more of the coating, and then dunk the cake ends into the melted chocolate or candy morsels. Make sure they’re fully submerged. Make sure any sprinkles or decorations are put on right after dunking to ensure they’ll stick well!

7. Place the cake pops in a Styrofoam block to dry, and refrigerate (or freeze if you’d like to speed up the process).

As for my opinion on this tasty recipe, I say give it a shot! Be prepared to be in your kitchen for quite a while though–molding the cake into the balls is quite a time commitment. For me, the melted chocolate as an outer coating proved to be somewhat messy and didn’t harden as quickly as I would’ve liked, so I recommend using candy coating morsels instead. Also, if you can’t find lollipop sticks at your local college grocery store, feel free to substitute with Shish Kabob skewers — they work just as good and are much easier to find!

 

After spending the evening slaving over the cake pops in the kitchen, although it seemed a bit tedious, in the end, I highly recommend giving cake pops a try. They’re great because you can customize them to any holiday, party, season, and even your preferred flavor! So for your next holiday party or gift exchange, put on your apron and whip up this treat that will surely be a big hit!
