Meet Steve Brenner. A friendly Penn State junior with a witty sense of humor and a contagious laugh. But Steve is not your average wildlife and fisheries sciences major. Every week, he dons a fresh suit and steps in front of the cameras to host PSU’s late night comedy show, After Hours.
After Hours is a part of the student run network, PSN-TV. It broadcasts every Wednesday on campus channel 15 (the College of Communications channel) and every episode is posted on YouTube. It follows roughly the same format as The Tonight Show, or Conan (whichever you prefer). Each episode begins with Steve’s monologue, followed by a segment from co-host, Heidi Kloster (note: Heidi was a previous HCPSU Woman of Style). The rest of the show is filled with anything from guest interviews, fake commercials, comedy videos, such as the history of State Patrick, and anything else that pops into the minds of the After Hours crew.
Steve not only hosts After Hours, but also serves as writer and producer. Her Campus snagged an interview with this superhero of late night television:
HC: How did you become involved in After Hours?
Steve: I became involved in After Hours when I made an internet video with my friend freshman year and we sent it around the Communications’ clubs. After Hours liked us and I have been a part of the show ever since!
HC: What is your favorite part about being host?
Steve: My favorite part about being the host is having an excuse to wear a suit. I have so many ties, when else am I going to wear them?
HC: How do you get along with your co-host?
Steve: Heidi and I get along in the way that peanut butter and jelly get along . . . deliciously.
HC: Why should people watch the show?
Steve: People should watch the show because it is hilarious. But more importantly, the show is produced by a bunch of students from all over Penn State who just like making some laughs and collaborating for a creative bonanza of comedy.
HC: Can other people get involved with After Hours?
Steve: Pretty much anyone can get involved in After Hours no matter what your major. Limit on those younger than 8 and older than 85. Sorry!
HC: Team Conan or Team Leno?
Steve: Team Coco
HC: If you could have anyone as a guest on the show, who would it be? (doesn’t have to be a real person)
Steve: Don Draper from Mad Men. Have you looked into those eyes?
HC: How would you describe After Hours in 3 words? One word?
Steve: Funny, Informative, Classy. One word? America.
HC: What message do you have for your fans?
Steve: Thank you so much for watching! Keep talking about us to your friends at parties. One day someone will know what the heck you are talking about and you will have made a new best friend.
