The 2024 Met Gala theme has been announced as Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising Gala held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts’ Costume Institute in New York City.
The Gala was founded in 1946 and the first major event was held in 1948. The Met Gala takes place on the first Monday in May every year.
On May 6, Vogue will host the Met Gala and it’s easy to say that we can’t wait to see the iconic fashion from our favorite celebrities!
Vogue stated that the exhibit will feature 250 rare items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection. Givenchy, Dior and Schiaparelli are just some designs we will see, over the span of 400 years of fashion history.
Some pieces are even too fragile to be worn again.
Those in charge of the Costume Institute also said the event will be focused on three main parts – land, sea and sky to recognize the natural world.
The Met Gala hosts for 2024 have yet to be announced and I can’t wait to see who they will be. Last year we saw Dua Lipa as one of the hosts and some previous hosts have been Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Sarah Jessica Parker, Timothée Chalamet and many more fashion icons.
Last year’s Met Gala theme was Karl Lagerfeld which was controversial to many.
Lagerfeld was a very well-known German fashion designer and creative director of Chanel from 1983 up until his death in 2019.
According to Time, the 2023 Met Gala team announced they will not be celebrating Karl Lagerfeld as a theme, as their values don’t line up with his. Lagerfeld was reportedly fatphobic, racist and misogynistic which doesn’t align with the Met Gala communities’ policy.
In a 2009 interview, Lagerfeld stated “no one wants to see curvy women.” Although Lagerfeld was huge in the fashion industry, the Met Gala community did not support the Karl Lagerfeld theme due to previously controversial statements and questionable judgments.

Although the guest list has not yet been revealed, I’m excited to see what iconic celebrities show out to the event wearing the most unique fashion of the year.
Many people also hope to see celebrities follow the theme seriously since many do their own thing instead.
Sarah Jessica Parker reportedly called out those who don’t follow the theme, as it is the one time a year celebrities aren’t seen in their normal fashion. In an interview with BuzzFeed News SJP states, “It is an assignment and you should interpret it, and it should be labor intensive, and it should be challenging.”
Let’s hope the 2024 guests listen.
Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing celebrities such as Blake Lively, Rihanna, the Kardashian/Jenner clan, Jared Leto, Gigi and Bella Hadid, and more make an entrance at the 2024 Met Gala.
