Like I said in my last article, I love this city.  I love everything about it; the people, the buildings and the language.  It’s amazing. However, as I find myself on my third week abroad, I’m missing home and I’m missing privacy.  So since I know many others will feel the same way I do right now, I created a list of things I have been doing to keep myself somewhat sane these past few days.

First, always make time for yourself. Whether it is sitting in your room catching up on a television show, or just taking a walk down the street, make sure you set a little time aside for you.  And only you.  This alone time will do worlds of a difference when you are feeling overwhelmed and overcrowded.

Second, look around and really see what is going on around you. Today I witnessed a man in the square playing guitar.  At first all I saw was this musician playing his guitar and people observing him, but then I really looked and I saw so much more.  I saw little kids chasing birds, families laughing together and couples holding hands. I saw life, and that alone gives you the refreshing breath you need.

Lastly, eat a good meal with only one or two other people. I have seven—yes count them seven—roommates so usually we are in large groups with a lot of talking going on.  In those situations it is rare that you have meaningful and calming conversations.  So, like I did tonight, go with one or two friends and escape for a little while.  Have a nice dinner with intimate conversations and I promise you will feel back on track in no time.

Most importantly, enjoy your time and celebrate this opportunity. Make the most out of it, because three weeks in and I’m already feeling like my time in Florence is going too quickly.  I am already wishing I had more time here.
