The majority of people focus on their personal pet peeves. Little things in life that others do that aggravate them. When thinking about pet peeves, you don’t initially realize just how much negativity they hold.
Just last night, I listened to Emma Chamberlin’s podcast, “Everything Goes.” On this episode, rather than discussing her pet peeves, she listed little things she loves. Focusing on what brings her joy in life rather than what she can’t stand.
This got me thinking, why put your focus on the little things you hate rather than the little things you love? Spinning pet peeves on its head is just a small way of bringing more joy and appreciation into your life. So, here are just a few of the little things that make me happy, rather than the list of things I can’t stand.
- Random Connections and Coincidences
-
This is by far one of my favorite things in life. Random coincidences or connections that you make with strangers, no matter the time or place.
Just the other day, one of my best friends at school and I realized her hometown friend originally lived in my hometown before moving across the country, and we share a handful of mutual friends. What are the odds?
Little connections like this bring me so much joy, because it makes the world feel a little smaller and interlinked.
- When My Nail Polish Matches
-
This makes me feel so put together and clean girl. I rarely have the same nail polish color on both my fingers and toes, but every time I do, it has randomly brought me joy. Such a minor choice and decision, but it, for some reason, makes all the difference.
- Freshly Shaved Legs in Clean Sheets
-
Is there a better feeling in the world? I find myself excessively washing my sheets and shaving my legs just to regularly experience this. I, without fail, will always have the best sleep with clean sheets and freshly shaved legs.
- Debriefing With My Best Friends After a Night Out
-
Nothing describes girlhood more than cuddling up with all your best friends with coffee and breakfast and discussing the night prior. I feel such an appreciation for all my friends and this time in my life, while recapping all the fun we had the night before.
- When Someone Tells Me Something Reminded Them of Me
-
Coming to college, it’s easy to lose touch with hometown friends or family. You are creating a life each of you is not necessarily a part of, and it’s hard to find the time to catch up every once in a while.
There’s nothing that makes me feel more loved and appreciated than when a friend or family member sends a text saying something reminded them of me or that they want to catch up soon. Knowing that distance may be physical but not emotional is so comforting and reassures the relationships you have in your life.
- When My Roommate Comes Home with Coffee for Me
-
My roommate and I are huge coffee people and, unfortunately, purchase coffee pretty much every day. On days when our schedules differ and we can’t get coffee together, we always make sure we get one for the other person.
Each time I get coffee and know she is home, and vice versa, we always get each other a coffee as well. Even though this has become something we regularly do, it doesn’t undermine the consideration and generosity of such a simple thing as getting each other coffee.
And those are just a few of the little things in life that bring me the most joy. Focus on the positive and think of the little things you love rather than your pet peeves!
