I Read it, so You Don’t Have to: All Eight “Bridgerton” Novels

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

If you’re one of the millions people who were enraptured by Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” I can definitely relate. In fact, I have finished each season of “Bridgerton” within a day of its release.

I’m also an avid reader, so when I realized that Netflix’s “Bridgerton” was an adaptation of the novels written by Julia Quinn I knew what I had to do. So throughout a three year time period, I read the “Bridgerton” novels, and here are my thoughts down below.

So, what exactly is “Bridgerton”?

“Bridgerton” is a book series created by Julia Quinn that gained worldwide fame when Netflix released its adaptation of the series into a show in Dec. 2020. There are eight novels in all (not including the extended epilogues). Each novel follows one of the members of the Bridgerton family (Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth) on their quest for love and failed attempts to avoid scandal in the ton.

Throughout these eight books, readers get insight into how tight a bond this family shares with each other. The friendships and relationships among brothers, sisters and parents are essential. However, the main aspect of each book is the question of a romantic relationship, and the “will they, won’t they?” question that appears in each novel.

Personally, I loved this series. If you want a long series that will endear you to its characters, and will keep you entertained, then this is the perfect series for you.

On the other hand, I don’t recommend it if you’re looking for a sophisticated read. If you’re one easily annoyed by historical inaccuracies, maybe don’t pick up the series.

However, if you do decide to read these books, I think you’ll be surprised by the amount of depth this romance series has. It’s not simply about romance. There’s also characters struggles that can be related to today’s age.

A few examples of these struggles are: anxiety, pressure, estrangement, grief, coping with tragedy and self worth to name a few. In my opinion, Quinn does a fantastic job in depicting her characters as “real” people with “real” struggles.

Listed below are links to each book (in order of release). If you decide to take the plunge into the world of Julia Quinn’s “Bridgerton,” you (hopefully) won’t regret it.
