Summer is finally here! Get ready for warm nights, beach days, BBQ’s and good vibes.

There are so many enjoyable things within arms reach, but it is important to remember the eco-friendly alternatives we can choose to use to keep our planet happy and healthy during the months we wait for all year.

Here are a couple tips and tricks to have a sustainable siesta while keeping our home as happy as we will be soaking up the summer rays.

Avoid Disposable Products

Summer brings many outdoor events in need of supplies, like cups, plates, utensils and more. Do your best to opt for reusable options to cut down on your waste. Target sells plates for .50 cents each, a great alternative to paper or plastic.

Another option could be passing out reusable cups as a party favor, which will really set your shindig apart from the rest of the get-togethers. Nothing is better than collecting reusable graduation cups from the numerous of parties throughout the summer.

Shop Smart

Nothing looks more aesthetic than pulling up to the local Trader Joes with your new tote bag to put all the goodies in. Instead of asking plastic or paper, choose option number three: reusable bags. There are so many cute options to go for, from tote bags to canvas. You can even set yourself aside from the typical reusable bags with a crochet tote.

Check out this breakdown of the best reusable grocery bags on the market. The bright side is that numerous grocery stores offer special discounts for using reusable bags and even sell very cheap options at the cash register. It is a very simple and easy way to be eco-friendly.

Ditch the Plastic for Steel

Most people have already made the switch from disposable plastic water bottles to sleek stainless steel alternatives, but summer includes a lot of outdoor activities. Instead of choosing the side of convenience, treat yourself to a nice new water bottle that can accompany you on any summer adventure, from a hot girl walk to beach hydration.

There is no need to spend a pretty penny on an expensive option, there are plenty of Hydroflask dupes all over Amazon for a fraction of the price. For hosting events, instead of grabbing a case of water, make a self-fill station with a cooler or jug. It is not only is it cost effective, but it will substantially cut down your plastic waste.

Walk More, Drive Less

Summer is the time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful environment that we live in. Though it may be easier said than done for some, try and switch the short commutes for an excuse to get your steps in. You will be burning calories and saving on gas emissions; talk about a win-win.

To make it more exciting, get a friend to compete in a step challenge with you throughout the summer to see who gets the highest total because nothing says saving the Earth like a little healthy competition. To fuel your incentive, here is a personal favorite walking playlist to motivate your feet.

Have a Closet Clean Out

As someone who desperately needs to go through their closet, this is a simple way to give back in a big way. We live in a culture of fast fashion, which equates to a lot of clothing waste. Though, this does not mean all those clothes won’t be useful in another way. A lot of big companies like North Face, Zara and Levi’s have a recycling program where consumers can exchange old clothes for discounts or other incentives. Alternatively, you can always donate your clothes which is an amazing way to give back to your community and cut down on personal clothing waste.

There are so many easy ways to keep the planet happy, so don’t forget to have a great eco-friendly summer!
