How To Embrace Your Inner Basic Witch This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Feeling like a spooky, scary skeleton but too afraid to admit it? Let go! Look, it’s almost Halloween and we all know what that means – it’s time for fluffy sweaters, long nights with scary movies (or old Disney Channel Halloween movies) and plenty of coffee to go around. But in this day and age, people say to throw that away – for fear of being “basic.”

Well, I say – forget that! You don’t need to let society lead you away from what you want – be proud of who you are! Embrace your inner basic witch this year by following these simple rules:

1. Buy that pumpkin spice latte.

Look girl, this drink only comes once a year. It’s not the time to simply avoid it just because you’re afraid people will judge you if they just get a whiff of it. Personally, I don’t care for the latte as much as others, but I can understand why you would want to drink it. So drink it, boo boo.

2. Take those fall Instagram pictures.

The colors only change once a year as well. Even if some people think we look “childish” throwing leaves in the air, we really don’t care. At least we know how to have some fun and embrace our inner child, while they’re stuck being a stick in the mud.

3. Those Disney Channel Halloween movies? Watch them.

“What? You still watch Halloweentown? But you’re 20!”

And your point is? It’s a classic, with Debbie Reynolds in one of her most memorable roles. This movie, along with any other Disney Channel Halloween movie, is goals for the season. It’s what we look forward to the most, so embrace those witches like Aggie Cromwell!

4. Break out your fall wardrobe.

Seriously, who cares if we’re in leggings and if our sweaters might be too big? We’re going from class to class in cold weather, so as long as we’re comfortable, warm and we feel good about ourselves, we shouldn’t be focusing on what other people say. Wear what you want and be proud of it.

5. Carve those cute pumpkins.

This may not be widely known, but apparently carving something cute into a pumpkin (like a ghost) is considered “basic.” I don’t know about that, though. I’ve carved plenty of pumpkins in my time, and carving a real design on a pumpkin take’s a lot of time to master. I’d say carving a cute little design is absolutely fine.

6. Try out that cute Pinterest craft you saw.

Pinterest has become one of those websites where people think that if you try to do one of the projects, you’re just trying too hard; when actually, we just want a challenge and for our home to look super cute. Some people just don’t understand good talent.

7. Buy wine and have a Halloween movie marathon.

This may be up to you. You can watch simple Halloween movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, or real thrillers like IT. Either way, be with your girls, pour some wine and have a basic night where you just get drunk and scream at the TV for hours. Who cares what people think as long as you’re having fun (within reason)!

8. If you see a cute costume idea, go for it!

Some people might think that’s underachieving, but I don’t think it means anything. This time of the year is for you to have fun and stay warm. If you feel confident in this costume, whether bought or homemade, you shouldn’t have to worry about what other people think. It’s your call!

I hope you’re not afraid to embrace the spells and incantations within you! Seriously, be as real as you want – this is your season! Have a Happy Halloween, my fellow basic witches!
