Studying abroad can be one of the most exciting experiences you will have during your college years. Whether your enjoing a café latte in a Rome café, going for a bike ride in beautiful Barcelona, or picnicking by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, every girl wants to look stylish while taking in the scenery of each country.
This can make packing for studying abroad a bit stressful, because every country has its own unique style. Deciding what to bring is important because
you need to take into consideration the fashions of your host country, while blending your own unique style with it.
I caught up with two Penn State girls studying abroad in two amazingly different countries for their advice on how to prepare for your travels.
Italy: Interview with Julie Montano, a junior studying abroad in Florence.
HCPSU: What would you recommend a student studying abroad to bring to Italy for the summer?
Julie: Flip-flops are definitely a no-go. Sundresses and gladiator sandals are in, as well as wedges. Light cardigans are great paired with skirts and shorts that aren’t too short.
HCPSU: What is fashion like there?
Julie: The fashions here are so much better than in America. Most people don’t wear super high heels at night because of the cobblestone, they wear chunky heels or wedges or ankle boots. For class, I wear boots, jeans, and a sweater with a scarf. Scarves are everywhere and super cheap to buy. Also, most people carry leather bags or Longchamp totes to class with their books and use cross-body bags at night. Going out clothes for the clubs and bars are basically the same at Penn State, except we always wear tights with dresses and skirts.
HCPSU: What is the general feeling of fashion in Italy?
Julie: The general feeling is that Italians look nice all the time. Hair and make-up always done – NEVER sweatpants! The have a concept called bella figura, which basically means look the best you can all of the time.
HCPSU: Any suggestions that you have for packing smart?
Julie: I suggest bringing a couple pairs of black leggings to wear during the day and at night, a couple pair of dark and light skinny jeans. Pack lots of scarves, which can dress up anything. Bring some going out dresses as well as nicer ones for seeing ballets or going out to eat, skirts (some short some longer), and a rain jacket with umbrella and possibly rainboots, I brought some and have worn them already. Be sure to bring gladiator shoes and fancy wedges and sandals.
Spain: Interview with Sara Strome, a junior studying abroad in Barcelona.
HCPSU: How would you describe the fashion trends in Barcelona?
Sara: There are definitely a lot of crazy colors and patterns. People wear tights and shorts with heels. Also, sweat clothes do not exist.
HCPSU: What kind of clothes would you tell girls to pack for the summer?
Sara: Summer is similar to American style but a little more trendy then your typical t-shirts. Some frilly shirts and linen shorts are in. Also, nothing constitutes as too scandalous because people walk around naked all of the time.
HCPSU: How would you describe the atmosphere of Barcelona?
Sara: The atmosphere is very lively and energetic. The Spanish are very open people, and you can really reflect that with your choice of clothing. Don’t be afraid of bright colors. Some day dresses in colors like coral or light green are a good idea, as well as large cross-body bags in different patterns.
Although summer may seem far away now, considering all the exams and homework assignments that still need to be completed, it’s still quickly approaching. Hopefully these fashion tips help make buying clothes and packing a little easier for you, whether you’re studying abroad or traveling to different countries. Have fun!
