The winter months can be difficult for many reasons, and it can take a toll on confidence and mental health. It is hard to break away from a dark place, especially when you don’t know where to start or how to address the way that you are feeling.
Journaling is a great way to express your thoughts and feelings in a private and intimate way. It can allow you to reflect on your problems and gain insight in order to grow from them.Â
College especially can be overwhelming and it is not always easy to take time for ourselves to reflect. These are five different ways to journal that I recommend to help boost self-confidence and to start or end your day on a positive note.
- Â list three things that you love about yourself
-
It can be physical traits, characteristics about yourself or things people have told you about yourself that you agree with. I have found that this simple technique has helped me to begin my days on a more positive note, which makes a big impact on the rest of the day. It can be extremely specific, such as “the way I do my makeup,” or broad such as “my humor.” This is a quick and easy way to give yourself some love and positivity as you begin your day.
- write positive affirmations
-
At the beginning of the day, week or month, you can write positive affirmations such as, “I am worthy of love.” A lot of times when self-confidence is low, there is a voice in our head putting us down, and these affirmations counteract that negative voice. These affirmations should be written in present tense as affirmations are meant to make you believe the statements to overcome negative thoughts.Â
- Write a letter to yourself that describes all of your accomplishments
-
You can write about your accomplishments from the past week, month or year. This letter can contain large accomplishments, or simple compliments to habits that you’ve established or a new skill you have acquired. There are no limits or rules to this letter; it can go in whatever direction your creativity takes you. This is a different and unique approach that can give you inspiration to write.
- Â list three things that you did today that you were proud of
-
If you decide to journal towards the end of the day, this is a great way to reflect on the day in a positive way. This will allow you to see that even on bad days, you accomplished good things. It can also be a great thing to look back on when you struggle to find good things about yourself.
- recap the best parts of your day that made you feel good
-
It is easy to get down on yourself and see the bad parts of the day, but if you take the time to highlight those small things that impacted your day positively, it can change your outlook and your overall mood. This is an unstructured way to write whatever comes to mind. It also can act as a diary, and you can look back on these moments in the future.
I hope these journaling techniques can help you reflect and improve your self-confidence.
