Books That Deserve A TV Adaptation

Reading and screen-writing often go hand-in-hand when creating content that is popular with viewers.

After using reading as a common way to relax during my own free-time, I have a list of several series that I wish were adapted into their own movie or TV version. This is a list of three series that deserve their own adaptations.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ trilogy

The first book in this trilogy had a movie adaptation that was released in 2018 and was relatively popular among viewers. The main protagonist, Rachel Chu, is thrown into her boyfriend’s family drama when she is invited to visit their home in Singapore for a wedding.

The first book had its moment in the spotlight when the first movie was released. However, the story doesn’t end there. It continues through two other books titled “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems.”

Although each book follows the same family, the series progresses through different family issues and introduces new plotlines and twists that refresh and draw readers in more.

The original movie adaptation of “Crazy Rich Asians” is still relatively popular, and I am sure an adaptation of each book would be welcomed by fans of the series.

‘Delirium’ trilogy

There was a spike in popularity within the dystopian genre in the late 2000s and 2010s. Other series such as “Divergent” by Veronica Roth as well as “The Maze Runner” were quickly adapted into franchises that covered each series from start to finish.

Perhaps a less popular series in the dystopian genre, the “Delirium” trilogy by Lauren Oliver follows a teenage protagonist in a future United States that has declared love to be a dangerous disease and requires every teenager to undergo a procedure to prevent it.

When I read it, I felt that it had a similar vibe to the classic “1984” by George Orwell. The overall concept of the series is interesting and could bring a revival in the dystopian genre.

‘The Selection’ series

One of the first series I read in its entirety was “The Selection” series by Kiera Cass. The series itself is a mix of fantasy and “The Bachelor,” and is made up of five books and a novella.

It could also classify loosely in the dystopian genre because it takes place in a future America that is a monarchy, instead of a democracy.

The series has been popular for a while now and has a plot that could translate nicely into a movie or TV series.

Rumors of a movie adaptation of the series started in 2020 but were resolved in 2023. Despite this, fans of “The Selection” series are adamant and loyal about their appreciation for the series. Along with a consistent fanbase, the plot of “The Selection” could easily garner new fans in movie and tv show enthusiasts regardless of when it would be released.

Readers often describe the action of reading as “seeing a movie in their head.” Doing this can make it easy to imagine which books would translate well into a different medium and which are best kept in writing.

These are my three candidates for books that deserve to be enjoyed by a new audience outside of the world of writing.
