5 Online Resources for Language Learning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Mastering a new language is a hard task. As someone who has had to learn four different languages, I am familiar with the struggle of not knowing where to start or how to succeed. However, I am here to assure you that it is possible. Here are five different online resources that will make language-learning a less stressful task:

Duolingo

Duolingo is an easy-to-navigate app that is designed to help you learn 38 different languages at no cost. From Spanish to Mandarin Chinese, the application offers personalized, interactive courses that help you learn through different games and challenges that make the process fun.

Pimsleur

Similarly to Duolingo, Pimsleur makes it easy to learn language through different personalized, interactive courses. However, this tool comes at a cost of $20 per month, as it offers more than 50 different languages and more in-depth courses than Duolingo. The platform — which has been appraised by Forbes, Travel + Leisure and Daily News — claims that 75% of its customers mastered a new language on-the-go in their down time.

italki

Looking for one-one-one instruction? italki would be the best platform for you, as it features 10,000 teachers that will help you individually, in personalized virtual lessons. An added bonus is that you pay per lesson, so you don’t have to pay in advance. That way, if you don’t like the service, you can stop as soon as you want to. In addition, you get to choose your teacher, so you can pick the one who would be the best fit for your needs.

Netflix

Have you ever considered learning a new language through Netflix? You can start by changing the language while you’re watching your favorite show and adding subtitles in english. I would also encourage you to look for different international shows in foreign languages. For example: watch Money Heist if you want to learn Spanish or if you want to learn German, I suggest you watch Dark.

Youtube

Like Netflix, YouTube is another video-streaming platform that can help you in your language-learning process. A lot of different channels featured on the site, including Innovative Language, are designed to help millions of viewers master a new language. You could also go on the search bar and search language courses for any language you are interested in learning.

Adiós y bonne chance, collegiettes!

I’m a current junior majoring in Journalism and French at Penn State. My dream is to work in publishing after college and go to law school to study corporate law.
Arden Ericson will graduate Penn State in May of 2023. As one of the Campus Correspondents for Her Campus at PSU, she is a double-major in Public Relations and French Language. After graduation, she will pursue a career that combines her passion for educational equity, social justice and French.
