10 Ways To Reduce Waste As A College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

From online shopping to late night takeout, college students create more garbage each day than most humans on this planet. In recent debates regarding the harmful effects of our waste on the environment, I have found there are a couple of simple ways we can limit our personal output.

Reusable Straws

This one is not only easy to get on top of but it’s also kind of trendy these days. I love keeping some in my backpack for when I’m on the go and need an afternoon pick me up from Starbucks. Find some stainless steel options or even paper ones to dispose of immediately, the options are endless!

Reuseable Bags

Whether it’s weekly groceries or a new skirt from Metro, BYOB (Bring your own bag of course)! Since I am from Connecticut, where a new $.10 fee has been placed on plastic bags, I have personally seen a huge difference in my local community due to this policy change.

Tumbler Cups and Water Bottles

Much like fabric bags, it’s super easy to get fun and festive with this one. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: being sustainable is TRENDY my friends. Like most, I love carrying my hydroflask with me at all times. Also, for all my iced coffee lovers – get a tumbler cup! I bought mine at Starbucks for only $3 and I use it almost every day.

Silicone/ Fabric Baggies

I have been using reusable storage baggies for as long as I can remember. In fabric or silicone versions, you can carry your favorite snacks throughout the day without worrying about tossing the plastic. Super easy to wash too!

Green2Go

I think Green2Go is one of Penn State’s top innovations. Almost all my meals in the dining hall are to go which is why it’s amazing students have been given the opportunity to stop using up all that Styrofoam. Styrofoam is one of the seven deadly sins of food waste in my opinion, so next time you’re in the dining hall, ask for a Green2Go. You can even bring them to and from the dining hall and eventually exchange for a free meal!

Shop As Needed

While college students are often hard on cash, we still have the tendency to over indulge. Budget at the beginning of each week and think about what you ACTUALLY eat. Even make it a discussion with your roommates and figure out who keeps leaving their stinky leftovers in the fridge each week.

Shop Thrift and Vintage

Ditch fast fashion ladies! Head to your local thrift shop or the nearest Savers for the best deals and trends. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to recycle clothing. If you don’t like that one going out top anymore, donate or sell, it’s that easy!

Buy In Bulk

Time to go to Costco ladies! Almost all dorm/ apartment necessities can be bought in highly efficient packaging. For example, save money and use less plastic by purchasing a reusable soap dispenser, then stick to buying 30 ounce bottles once a month instead of once a week. This is a great way to stock up on the essentials without the extra packaging.

Real Silverware and Dishes

When I first came to school, I was shocked more people weren’t using this tactic. Ditch the paper plates and plastic silverware and you’ll have more durable, environmentally friendly ways to dine at home.

Recycle!

Easy enough, take the advice and go save the planet!
