10 Reasons to Look Forward to Going Home For The Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Ah, summer break. Although most of us are excited for the school year to end and to get our tan on, there is a sad feeling deep down that always gets to us. We’ll be gone from our friends for three months and away from all the festivities that college has to offer. However, we know that summer break is truly where it’s at. Here are 10 reasons why going home is possibly the best thing ever.

1. You get to sleep again

Although we all enjoy those weekends where all we do is go out and party, we pray for those weekdays where we can sleep in instead of going to class. During the summer, you get that choice every single day, if you aren’t working. Either way, you get more sleep. That’s worth anything.

2. You get to see your pets again

As an animal lover, one of the main reasons I go home is to see my family and this includes my dog and my cat. For anyone who loves animals as much as I do, coming home to a big fur-ball rushing up to you to greet you is one of the best feelings ever.

3. You get the “college gossip” with your old friends

Not only do you get to talk with your high school friends again, you are all in different colleges. Which means different stories. Which also means more entertainment for you to talk about all throughout the summer. Who knows what went down wherever they go.

4. Warmth instead of trudging through the cold

Unless you go to a warm school, us colleges that literally live in the valley, or where it’s literally always snowing, pray for the warm days on campus. People down south look at 60 or 50 degrees days as cold, but we know it’s a sign of the summer and that our shorts and t-shirts will be coming out once more. When summer is here, there will be no more sudden snowstorms in March.

5. Time to tan!

By the end of winter, our skin looks like it has been drying up inside a cave in the middle of the mountains somewhere. When the sun finally comes out in the summer and we have all that free time, we get to toast it back up again. Who doesn’t love a good tan?

6. Good. Food.

If all you have is a meal plan for college, you desire your mothers home cooked food. Real food that doesn’t taste processed. You get that all summer while you’re home. No more instant ramen for three more months.

7. You don’t have to take care of yourself

If you actually are going to be home during the summer, you won’t have to look around for your medicine anymore if you get sick. In fact, with your parents right there to take care of you, you really don’t have to do anything. They’ve missed you so much that they want to take care of you while you’re sick, so sit back and enjoy it. God knows I did when I broke my arm earlier this semester.

8. Catch up with your siblings

Whether it’s our older siblings or the younger ones, we can’t deny that sometimes we miss our pain in the butt sisters or brothers. Now, coming home, it’s almost a delight to actually be with them and talk to them.

9. Be with your family

Summer time is family time. Although it’s fun to go off with friends to the beach or to the mall, it’s always fun to just hang out with family. Have a barbeque, go to an amusement park, or just chill by the pool. They’re your family and they really always will be there for you, so enjoy them while you can, even if your mother taking a million pictures is too much sometimes.

10. Some valued me-time

As much as we love college, having the time to just sit down and relax by yourself with a book or even watching Netflix can really help someone’s mental health. Although going out is fun, having that quiet time is sometimes better and the summer is the perfect time for some self-reflection and some chilling out.

Good luck on your finals, collegiettes!
