If you’ve ever walked across campus in the middle of a State College snowstorm, you know winter here hits different. Between the icy sidewalks, freezing wind tunnels and 8 a.m. classes that feel way too early for the temperature outside, staying warm can feel like a full-time job. However, there are still so many ways to make the season cozy, fun and full of small comforts. Here are ten ways to beat the cold this winter — Penn State style.
- BUNDLE UP IN LAYERS
-
Penn State winters are no joke, so grab your warmest puffer, fluffy earmuffs and a pair of fuzzy socks. Layering isn’t just practical, it’s basically a warm hug you can wear across campus. Bonus points if you incorporate a fun, faux fur coat.
- FIND YOUR FAVORITE STUDY SPOT
-
When the wind is howling down College Ave, there’s nothing better than settling into a warm corner. Try the comfy chairs in the HUB, the quiet nooks in Pattee or a seat by the window at Irvings with a latte in hand. My personal favorite is near the front of the Sparks building since it is not as known.
- WARM UP WITH THE CREAMERY’S HOT CHOCOLATE
-
We all love the Creamery’s ice cream, but their hot chocolate is seriously underrated. It’s the perfect pick-me-up between classes when you’re trying to thaw out your fingers. Pair it with one of their grilled stickies for a sweet pick-me-up.
- MAKE YOUR DORM FEEL LIKE HOME
-
Add soft blankets, fairy lights and maybe a little scented candle (if allowed). Creating a cozy space can make the long winter nights feel comforting instead of cold.
LED lights are also a fun touch, and you can set them to a cozy color. A sunset lamp also feels like a necessity when trying to regain some of the summer, feel good energy.
- STAY ACTIVE INDOORS
-
Whether you hit the IM Building for a workout, join a yoga class or just dance around your room to your favorite playlist, moving around keeps you warm and boosts your mood. My personal favorite has been going to the IM and doing their spin/workout classes.
- SOUP SEASON IS HERE
-
There’s nothing like a hot bowl of soup after walking through freezing air. Stock up on ramen, instant pho or homemade soup from the dining hall or Panera. It’s comfort food at its best.
- TAKE THE BUS AND SAVE YOUR TOES
-
When it’s below freezing, the CATA bus is a literal lifesaver. Learn the Loop schedules so you can skip the icy walks and stay toasty on your way to class. This is especially necessary to help save yourself from an icy wipeout.
- HAVE WINTER MOVIE NIGHTS WITH FRIENDS
-
When it’s too cold to go out, grab your roommates, throw on cozy PJs and queue up some feel-good movies. “The Holiday” or “Little Women” always hit perfectly this time of year. “Dancing with the Stars” and the “Golden Bachelor” are also especially popular right now.
- TREAT YOURSELF TO WARM DRINKS
-
I love little warm moments that make winter days so much brighter: hot tea before bed, coffee in the morning or a peppermint mocha from Starbucks.
- APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY OF CAMPUS IN WINTER
-
Even though it’s freezing, there’s something peaceful about Old Main covered in snow or the quiet crunch of icy sidewalks in the morning. Penn State winters can be tough, but they’re also kind of magical.
At the end of the day, winter at Penn State is about finding comfort in the little things like warm drinks, cozy spaces and good company. So grab your blanket, bundle up and make the most of the chilly months before spring semester sunshine returns.
