Why I Think Valentines Day is Overrated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Behrend chapter.

I know its pretty harsh to say that Valentines Day is overrated. You might be thinking that I am a sad and lonley person who is bitter about the holiday. However, this is not the case. I have been in an amazing relationship for over six years now. I started dating my boyfriend my freshman year of highschool, and while I celebrated Valentines Day back then, I still never really enjoyed it. I always liked the idea of a time to celebrate love but that does not seem to be the case in todays socitey.

Nowadays people go crazy over Valentines Day presents! It seems to me that its just a time to show off who can buy the most expensive flowers or come up with the most creative pintrest creation. I feel that showing off how much time or money you spent on a present is not love. Its not celebrating what the holiday really means! Both me and my boyfreind are extremely busy and broke college students, we should’nt feel pressure to have to buy something we cannot afford or spend time we simply don’t have to make some crazy gift just becuase everyone else is doing it.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that I don’t love when my boyfriend buys be flowers or gives me a card. However my issue lies with the fact that he is only doing it because it is Valentines Day. I feel like going and spending time not only your significant other, but just you loved ones in general is how I feel the day should be spent. Going out and eating your favorite meal and spending time, not money, with other around you. I feel that you should not be pressured to have to drop everything over something that society is telling you to do. I am not even spending Valentines day with my boyfriend this year and I don’t feel sorry for it. I am sad because I miss him but not becasue its Valentines Day.

All in all what I am trying to say is to stop stressing about this day. If you don’t have a significant other, spend time with those you love. If you do have a loved one don’t worry about doing some giant gesture and just focus on what the holiday means. Also, I am not saying that you can’t do a big gesture on this day, but do it because you want to show your loved one that you care about him/her and not just to show off for those around you!
