My favorite scary movie that has recently come out would have to be Hereditary. Hereditary is a very confusing movie that you would have to watch from start to end for it to make sense. This film is more of a supernatural, psychological horror movie. The family in it, named the Grahams, are haunted by a demon after the death of their very secretive grandmother. A lot of tragedy happens in this film as well. There are a lot of unexpected twists and turns throughout that keep you on your toes. I would recommend this movie to anyone, it is too not gory and the plot of it has such a different ending than you would expect. The only thing that I would say about this film is that it is a bit unsettling to some.

I absolutely love scary movies, and could name so many that I love, but I’m going to name off some classics here that will get you in the mood for spooky season. If you’re a Halloween lover like me, you’re going to love Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and the movie Halloween as well. I’m a sucker for a great, old scary movie. Even if the graphics aren’t all that scary, the plots are what make them great movies.
Nightmare on Elm Street is the classic slasher film that is about a couple teenagers that fall into Freddy Krueger’s nighttime traps, by coming to them in their dreams, which also kills them in real life as well. The kids suspect that their parents could have something to do with this menace sneaking into their dreams, and they try and figure out what it is. There are 8 Nightmare on Elm Street movies, but I would stick to the classic, they tend to get a bit corny.

Another movie I love is Friday the 13th! This is your classic horror movie; the kids go to summer camp and there is a killer on the loose. The kids then find themselves being stalked by the killer, also known as Jason Voorhees, who is a disfigured man. The kids at the camp are being killed off one by one, and the counselors are the ones that have to try and stay alive against this

The last one that I am going to talk about would be Halloween, because in 2018 they released a new Halloween film! Halloween is about the infamous Michael Myers, who first started his killing when he murdered his 17 year old sister when he was only 6 years old. He was then locked away for 15 years, but while being transferred he managed to escape and returned to his hometown to look for his next victims. The new 2018 Halloween film takes place 40 years later, after Michael was caught again, and of course he manages to escape just one more time. Through the Halloween movies, he becomes infatuated with a woman named Laurie Strode, who he tried to kill but never succeeded.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a 2015 horror film starring Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka and Lucy Boynton. The film follows three separate female main characters, two of which are stranded at their religiously based all-girls boarding school during winter break. We soon discover that a demonic presence is lurking within the walls of the school, resulting in a film that has an incredibly unnerving quality. It’s not a serious time investment to sit down and watch The Blackcoat’s Daughter (it’s only an hour and thirty minutes long), so if you’re looking for a movie that covers most of the features indicative of a creepy demon flick without much commitment, this might be the way to go.

Though the movie is rated R, it doesn’t have any especially horrific standout scenes (as far as demon centered horror movies go at least). The film takes a less aggressive stance than the average horror movie and instead uses imagery as opposed to outright gore to make its point. The short watch time and eerie subtleties make this a great movie to help you get into the Halloween spirit.

Some of the movies I like to watch this time of year aren’t your run of the mill horror flick! Here are some of the movies I really enjoy during spooky season!
Rosemary’s Baby
This movie is about a young married couple who move into a new apartment complex with some unique tenants. Rosemary, the main character comes to find that these tenants are not what you’d expect them to be, nor is her husband. I would rate this movie a 4 out of 10 in scariness but a 7 out of 10 in freaky vibes. Overall, a 10 out of 10 would recommend, especially if you love older movies. This one comes from the mid-1960s, and the actress who plays Rosemary also played Daisy Buchanan in the 70s version of the Great Gatsby!
Disturbia
This movie is about a young boy who goes on house arrest during the summer while his mom goes away to work all day. He meets the girl next door, and along with his other friend, they go investigating his other neighbor who has a semi-spooky track record. He’s seen his neighbor do some really sketchy things, so he and his friends go snooping to figure out what this guy is up to. 6 out of 10 in scariness and not a lot of creepy vibes, but, overall, 9 out of 10 would recommend.
American Psycho
I’m assuming a lot of you have heard about this movie, mainly because of its cult following. This movie definitely amps up the spook factor and isn’t your usual pick for a scary movie to put on. It’s about a young businessman, his struggles with society, and how he copes with it. It definitely gets intense at points, so brace yourself if you haven’t watched it before. 7.5 out of 10 for scary factor and 8.5 out of 10 for creepy vibes. I would definitely recommend it if you love a good psychological thriller though.
