People Hooking up With People in Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Behrend chapter.

College is a great place where many young adults experiment and try new things. It is, for many, the first-time drinking, it gives a chance to meet new people with similar interests, and also provides a way to hook up. Many students expect to find their significant other in college, but some also come to college already being in a relationship. Unfortunately, some partners break up beforehand, while others try to commit to a long-distance relationship. Beings that there are so many new people and social atmospheres to interact, some individuals fall short of cheating. While others find themselves cheating, there are also those who knowingly pursue those that are in the relationships. So that raises the question of whether the cheater is worse or the person who consciously engages in hooking up with that individual?

The situations can range from all different levels of severity; there are simply the one-time hookups with either the boyfriend or girlfriend, to the repeated occurrences of any form of intercourse, or it can extend to encouraging affairs with those who are married with children. With marriages, there also becomes issues with sneaking around, living a separate life that can put your family in jeopardy. Along with the risk of one’s family, there also is the issue of the other partner finding out. If this seems to happen, there become issues between them and the lover, causing tensions between everyone.

Though, it is a risky situation and, most likely, the two parties are completely aware of the consequences, it is unfortunate when feelings become established. Whether it’s by either party, whenever there is repeated hooking up and communication, eventually feelings may occur. The lover knows the person is in a relationship, therefore their feelings have to be restricted, this can negatively affect the lover’s life. In many ways, the person in the relationship is leading the other person on and even when the person breaks up with their significant other they decide not to pursue a relationship with the lover of many months.

Yeah, there are many new things to experience in college, but know the risks of whatever it may be. Knowing the consequences of hooking up with people that are already in relationships can help save yourself and the other parties involved from hurt or despair.
