MTV Shows You Forgot About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Behrend chapter.

Nothing warms my soul more than a good evening of TV nostalgia. Most people think of Hey Arnold, Courage the Cowardly Dog or The Amanda Show, but if you were anything like me (Rebellious and angsty), I liked the shows I wasn’t supposed to watch. I loved sitting in my room binge-watching a four-hour marathon of early 2000’s reality shows. Lucky for you, these shows are still online or you can even find them on an Amazon Firestick! Here are some of the favorites if you need a place to start.

Rock of Love

These types of shows were my personal go-to shows, the C or D list celebrity looking for “love”. These shows were pretty much all the same, the show starts off with about 15-20 contestants and the celebrity votes contestants off if they did not like them. Rock of Love, however, was a little special. It had the perfect amount of drama and amazing (crazy) contestants. Brett Michaels also hit a soft spot for me because I mean, who doesn’t love a boy in a band?

Room Raiders

Room Raiders. The show that combined kidnapping, robbery and dating. The premise of this show is that three men or women have their rooms inspected, or “raided” by another single man or woman. Then the contestant must decide who he or she wants to date. The contester also is given an “investigation kit” including a black light, flashlight and a pair of long tweezers.

Parental Control

Parental Control was definitely a show that stressed you out from all the drama. This show starts with parents who hate their child’s significant other. They search and interview prospective dates for their child then once they find two, the daughter/son must go on a date with the two chosen contestants. At the end, the daughter/son must choose to continue dating the person their parents hate, or to choose a new boyfriend/girlfriend.

Cribs

Does anyone else like feeling poor? Because obviously, I did when I would watch hours of tours of houses I could never afford. This show has starred some of the most famous celebrities including Mariah Carey, Ryan Sheckler, 50 Cent and MANY more. Each celebrity got to walk the audience through their home, showing off crazy kitchens, huge closets, over the top pools, ect.

Date My Mom

This show was definitely one of the… weirder shows in my opinion. In this show, moms go on a date with a contestant who is looking for love. While on the date, the mom must sell their daughter to the contestant in hopes that he will choose their daughter to date. Like I said, the show is a little odd especially when moms memorize daughter’s measurements and favorite sex positions but it is definitely entertaining.

The X Effect

This show started stirring the pot in relationships before it was cool. It was filled with drama. The show reunited broken couples and gave them a free weekend getaway. There must be a plot twist though right? Of course! Both individuals are in new relationships and must choose at the end of the show if they want to continue their new relationship or get back together with their ex.
