My after school sessions with Carrie Bradshaw taught me a lot more than what would be expected out of the title. Coming home when I was in high school meant I was able to spend some good quality time gossiping, laughing and even crying with the fearsome foursome that made up “Sex and the City”. The show was so much more than just Carrie and Mr. Big, Samantha’s random hook ups or even all the designers (though that was a perk). It showed me true friendship and what having ride or die gal pals could be like.

Samantha taught me to do what you want, no matter what anyone else says about it.

Some might call her a “bitch”, but Samantha was herself in the most unapologetic way possible. She taught me that you should always love yourself the most, and to keep your head held high while doing that. Never let anyone tell you that you’re something you’re not, and that being blunt not only with others, but yourself can be exactly what you need at the end of the day.

Charlotte taught me that it is okay to be a romantic at heart.

Even if things do not go according to your plan, sometimes that is for the best. She also helped me realize that you are allowed to dream and to have standards when it comes to love, but most importantly never to settle.

Miranda gave me confidence in wanting to be an independent woman.

Miranda was an accomplished lawyer who could proudly support herself. She did not need to rely on anyone else, but only kept those around who she wanted. She taught me not to apologize for what I accomplish and to be a proud, independent woman.

But the one who taught me the most was Carrie Bradshaw.

Carrie was a journalist living in New York city (much like what I would like to do), she had her own apartment, beautiful clothing and three of the best friends she could ever ask for. She taught me that it is okay to want to do something you love and that even if people think it is impractical, that with hard work you can make anything possible. That even if you wear dresses and gorgeous Jimmy Choo’s that you can still be independent and strong.

Carrie also taught me a lot about love and relationships.

She made me realize that you don’t always have to know what you want, and sometimes you end up finding it out too late. Carrie, through her relationship with Mr. Big, taught me that relationships are hard and take a lot effort to maintain. She also made me realize that you need to be true to yourself and those around you. That being honest by saying the things that you are most afraid to, even though they mean the most to you, will end up saving you some heartache in the end.

But the most important thing that I have taken from Sex and the City is that you should never make yourself small; that no one can take who you are away from you without your permission. Carrie taught me to never let anyone tame you, because the people who matter will be able to run right beside you.

Sex and the City is much more than sex and the city. HCXO
