15 Things All Commuters Understand: As Told by New Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Behrend chapter.

Commuter students are all around us: in our classes, waiting in line for coffee, and tailgating us from Chipotle all the way back to campus (because we needed chips and guac before we could even start to think about writing that 10 page paper that’s due at midnight). Commuting students are just like you, only the money saved from living off campus goes right back into paying for gas and repairing our cars; so, here’s a look into the everyday struggles of a commuter student!

1. Trying to leave in the morning:Hitting snooze ten times comes with a price tag.

2. Running late:Whether you’re behind by one minute or ten, sometimes you need every second you can get.

3. Traffic:Why is everyone driving so slowly?! Don’t they know you have a class to get to?

4. School zones and pedestrians:They can make you go from 60 to 0 real fast.

5. Making it to campus in record time:If you didn’t already have such big dreams, you could give NASCAR a run for their money.

6. Finding a parking spot:Sometimes you have to challenge an oncoming car to a game of Chicken.

7. Forgetting something important:If it’s at home, it may as well be at the bottom of the ocean.

8. Constantly filling your gas tank up:Your tank usually goes empty on the same day every week.

9. Eating on the go:Between school, work, and the many activities you have going on, you often feel pressed for time. More often than not, this results in snacking in between classes and while waiting at red lights.

10.  Putting on concerts in the car:We bet your school didn’t know they had a pop star on campus.

11.  Caffeine addiction:The love runs deep.

12.  Missing out on roommate bonding:The roomie issues we could do without, but the spontaneous adventures are always fun.

13.  Weekends:Driving to and from campus daily gets old fast, and you need your beauty rest.

14.  Finally, leaving campus at the end of the day:We all know you’re going home for a much deserved nap.

15.  Trying to tell yourself that you’re still a “typical” college studentBeing an “untraditional student” doesn’t have to act as a bumper for you.. get out there, make awesome friends, and enjoy your life!

Nicole is on her victory lap at Penn State Behrend and is looking forward to graduating with a degree in Communication and Media Studies. In her (limited) spare time, Nicole enjoys reading and binging on the latest Netflix shows. She also manages multiple social media accounts for local organizations and is an opinion editor for Behrend's newspaper. When she isn't downing margaritas, she is usually stressing about what it is she wants to do with her life after she graduates... if you have any suggestions, DM her some ideas for her to kill time with when she becomes an official adult in December.
