When Someone Criticizes your Hometown

Anyone who goes to Providence College knows that most people are from Mass (what I now know you always call Massachusetts) and Rhode Island. I have learned a lot from these New Englanders which includes but is not limited to:

  1. Using the term “Wicked” to say that something is cool
  2. Calling someone a “Hardo” when they are trying a bit to hard
  3. And finally never insulting Tom Brady… EVER because he is the GOAT

I am from Upstate New York. Albany, to be more specific, and there is nothing I hate more in this world than when someone makes fun of my home town while trying to be funny. I have had many people say, “sorry” to me when I tell them where I’m from. Um… what, I take this very personally. I equate this to someone insulting my family: I can do it but you will get punched if you try too. The following are just a few of my reactions to these “hilarious” jokes people make about where I’m from…

First I am shocked that someone would have the nerve…

Then I get angry…

I’m sorry but have you ever seen the fall foliage in New York, its straight out of a goddamn Lifetime movie…

Or the fact that we happen to be the CAPITAL of the state where New York City is located…

Also it’s my HOME so I would rather you not say your rude things about it…

People often ask me,”what I do since there is nothing up there”…

Oh I don’t know? MAYBE I GO SWIM IN OUR GORGEOUS LAKES OR GO VISIT THE LARGEST NATIONAL PARK IN THE COUNTRY!!!

The absolute worst part of it all is often when I ask people if they have actually been to my home town they have not.

So this is a PSA to not say anything about where someone comes from unless its is kind.

Thank you all for your time.
