6 Non-Horror Halloween Movies You Need To Watch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Providence chapter.

For wimps like me who get scared easily, Halloween can be a mixed bag of emotions (hopefully there is some candy in there too). Don’t get me wrong, I love the illuminating spirit of the holiday and the festivities that come along with it, but when it comes to the push for watching lots of horror movies? Count. Me. Out. I have seen a handful of horror movies, and let’s just say those experiences were not pleasant for me. I now stay as far away from horror movies as I can, so for those of you that love the spooky spirit but don’t want to scream and cry in the process, here are some of my favorite non-horror Halloween movies that aren’t too basic:

1. The Addams Family

In this lovable film, follow the Addams’ on their kooky journey of finding a long-lost family member. If you’re looking for creepy, bizarre fun instead of bloody fun, then this tale as old as time is the movie for you! Plus, who doesn’t love films surrounding relatable families, especially when that family is literally the definition of Halloween?

2. Corpse Bride

This charming and sultry Tim Burton film is one of those classics that you have to watch at least once in your lifetime. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter beautifully tell a witty and tragic love story filled with music, zombies, and arranged marriages. I definitely recommend this cartoon to everyone that has a heart: even if you’re a zombie that doesn’t have a heartbeat, you would like this movie too.

3. Twitches

Of course, this list would not be complete without at least one Disney Channel Original movie. The story revolves around identical twin sisters who were separated at birth. On their 21st birthday, their protectors force them to meet each other because the two of them must use their powers to save the world together. If you like coming-of-age stories that have a hint of magic, then this is the one for you. Not to mention, there is also a Twitches Too!

4. Into The Woods

Based off of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this movie musical adaptation intertwines the storylines of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel in an original and spooky way. Though the plot may not be directly related to Halloween, the mystical quality of the film definitely makes it feel as though it could be one. Major bonus: Meryl Streep and Anna Kendrick star in it!

5. Coraline

I was extremely creeped out by the idea of button eyes when I was little, so this movie wasn’t exactly my personal favorite when growing up; however, looking back, it is definitely not as scary as my 10-year-old self thought it was. This movie, which can be found on Netflix, is about a young girl who finds another world that replicates her home, but is depicted in a more idealistic way. Well, that is until this new world won’t let Coraline leave.

6. Mostly Ghostly: Who Let the Ghosts Out?

Based off of R.L. Stine’s novel, the plot follows a boy named Max who discovers a hidden tunnel in his house that links to a world of evil ghosts who have a plan to break free on Halloween night. With the help of two friendly ghosts, Max has to try to save the world from the havoc that these ghosts are going to bring. I have to admit, this film is definitely super adorable, especially because it has the dad from Wizards of Waverly Place (David DeLuise) and the little girl from Corey in the House (Madison Pettis) in it!

I hope you found a non-horror movie that you haven’t seen and would be interested in adding to your repertoire of Halloweentown, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Hocus Pocus, which are also amazing. Stay safe this Halloween – that includes staying safe from horror movies! Remember to NEVER look under the bed or in the closet.
