5 Failed Lenten Promises

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Providence chapter.

1. Giving up Social Media

To those people who deleted all social media apps on their phone, I applaud you. You got further than I ever did by deleting Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook and intending to not use them for forty days. It’s hard to not look at social media for a full forty minutes! But if you’re having trouble totally giving it up, don’t fret! Try limiting the time you spend on social media each day and spend some of the extra time you have doing something good for others!

2. Eating Healthy

Go you! I’m happy that you decided to challenge yourself to eat healthy for FORTY whole days. No desserts at Ray? Impressive! But a bad day can get to you, and since ice cream can solve nearly any problem, you may break your Lenten promise. Don’t worry though – maybe you can give yourself a cheat day once every two weeks or so because everyone needs to treat themselves!

3. Gym Everyday

Making it to the gym every day is quite the accomplishment! I wish I could manage my time that way. Sometimes doing homework, hanging out with friends, or going to meetings can get in the way of your goal. If you’re struggling to make it to the gym 7 days a week, try to go every other day instead! That way you can end Lent feeling good physically, while also making time for your other activities.

4. Giving up Coffee

To those brave people who thought that they could do it and failed, I admire you. This is something that not many people could go a day without having, and you put yourself up to the task of letting it go for over a month. So your migraines or exhaustion broke you? At least you tried! Maybe try to give up coffee for a certain number of days a week to finish Lent strong!

5. Procrastination

Oh procrastination, many of us know you all too well! Procrastination is so hard to give up, especially because it means avoiding responsibilities.  Work is stressful, but think about how much more stressed you are when you leave it all until the last minute. If you avoid procrastination, you’ll be able to do all the things you always say you wish you could! If you’re struggling to give up procrastination, try to make it productive! Instead of going on your phone, go to the gym or go for a hike – relieve some of that stress!
