Sweet Treats, Easy Eats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Princeton chapter.

I confess, I’m a foodie. In high school, my friends and I loved trying out a new restaurant or a new recipe. Baking was one of our go-to activities. In the last week of summer, before our lives headed in different directions, two of my best friends and I had a baking day. Five recipes, three sticks of butter, and an entire jar of Nutella later, we were exhausted but completely, utterly satisfied. There’s something about baking that is extremely comforting. No matter what happens, you can always count on the fact that if you add x cups of sugar, flour, butter, and water together and bake for y amount of time, the end result is a tasty treat to enjoy.
I was relieved to find that a few of my hallmates have found the magic in baking as well. We immediately bonded over our love for fresh apple crisp still hot from the oven. At Princeton, baking became a social activity, a stress reliever, and an excuse for study breaks all in one. The only problem has been limited ingredients. Without a stand mixer, piping tips, or more exotic ingredients such as buttermilk, trying new recipes hasn’t always been easy. However, there are still ways to make tasty treats with ingredients found in the U-Store or small nearby markets like Olive’s. Here are a few of my favorite recipes beyond your typical chocolate chip cookies or apple crisp. Most of them don’t even require an oven! Happy eating!
