Winter is far from over, Princess. Though we long for that sweet, sunny day when we can once again put on sandals, floral prints and bright smiles; we must bear this wintry brunt until warmer, leg-baring weather comes. So instead of idly shuffling through impure snow, let’s end the last of “the damp time” with a great, big bang. “How can I do that?” you ask. Let us look to the perpetually chic, late Audrey Hepburn. You’d better be as loyal a fan to this lovely creature as I am because she is not only adorable, but also central to my response. Moreover, it is my express desire that you see Breakfast at Tiffany’s because it too is important to my answer. And if you’ve seen it by now then you my dear will get a Princess only discount!

Do it now!

In the opening scene of this heartfelt flick, honorary Princess, Audrey’s character, Holly, sashays over to the Tiffany’s store window in her taut, floor-length, and black Givenchy gown to enjoy a petite breakfast. The array of fine diamonds she sees immediately puts this glamour-conscious femme at ease, and the viewer no sooner falls in love…with the black, elbow-length satin gloves she wears! This accessory, my dear, is the focus of my article. Wait, I am not at all stating that we should, in unison, strut out in evening wear at breakfast time, but I am segueing to the main focus of this article. As luck would have it, this fall 2010 season, designers, i.e. the Fashion gods, have given us fiercely modern remakes of the satin classic. Deity numero uno, Lanvin, threw down the metaphorical gauntlet with one of his many urban warriors, Anastasia in this take-no-prisoners, dominatrix-like look that isn’t exactly for a Princess. Though I have no doubt these black leather gloves, the studded black leather belt, and raven black, blunt bangs would make me look like the baddest chick on the block, this intensely black getup has the faintest echoes of Catwoman. And our goal, because I’m sure I’ve yet to mention it thus far, is to survive the remainder of winter, not to relive Halloween.

Fortunately for us, Italian houses, Pollini and Trussardi 1911, have more age-appropriate translations of Lanvin’s sexy glove. Pollini’s mittens not only seem both comfortable and warm, but also have an on-the-go athleticism that perfectly suits those of us who hardly have time for coffee in the morning let alone a meticulously feminine ensemble.

In Trussardi 1911, the sophistication is clearly evocative of the great Coco Chanel (how many icons will I pay homage to in one article?) and I find the edginess gives it a toughness that is très, très chic. Bonus: these leather gloves are fingerless, so there is no need to sacrifice one great pastime, textin,’ for another, stylin.’

If you can’t make glove love with Lanvin, Pollini, or Trussardi 1911, then do it with Ruche, Lulu’s, Akira, ModCloth, or Urban Outfitters. Let’s hope I was successful in starting a fashion fire to keep you warm during the bitterly cold days ahead…you’ll be the Princess, it’s a glove story, baby, just say, yes.
